You can't just connect to any system, you need permission from whoever is paying the bill, and they'll give you the required information. I'm assuming you have an Eircom DSL box that lets you connect to it over wireless, and it has security on the wireless. There are two issues here:
    - your laptop might be seeing multiple networks e.g. your neighbours. You need to be sure you're trying to connect to the right one, the one with the ID that you have access to.
    - you need to speak to whoever set up the security on the wireless, which is usually whoever is paying the bill. If that's you, what instructions did you get with the box? IIRC Eircom gives you a default ID and security key.

If you know what you're doing, you can go in to the box using a cable (not wireless) and configure the wireless that way. It doesn't sound like you'd be able to do that, so speak to whoever pays the bill and/or read the instructions from Eircom. Maybe they could help you by phone, but you'd have to give account details etc so they know you're not trying to freeload off one of your neighbours.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

if this is your wireless network and it has not been used before ie not shared in a house etc

you need to connect the wireless modem to the laptop with the network cable.
then click on start button and select run a little box with pop up and type cmd n hit enter.
you should see a liitle black box with flashing / beside this type ipconfig here u well see ip address write this down
now open up the internet page and write this number in as if you were entering a web address. this will bring you to the router settings you will be able to find your security code or wep key here.

also some router have it printed underneath them on a little sticker

    hope this helps:D
