    From rte.ie
One person remains in hospital following two accidents involving LUAS trams in Dublin overnight.
Five people were taken to hospital following a crash on the Red LUAS line.
A taxi collided with a tram near Smithfield at around 8.15pm yesterday evening.

Four people who were travelling in the taxi were taken to St James's Hospital.
One person who was travelling on the LUAS was also brought to hospital.
Four of the injured people were later discharged, and the person remaining in hospital is described as stable.
Earlier today, a man in his 30s sustained a serious leg injury as he attempted to board a Green line LUAS tram in Ranelagh.
The accident happened at around 12.30am this morning.
He was taken to St Vincent's Hospital.
Figures from the Rail Procurement Agency given to RTÉ under the Freedom Of Information Act reveal that over 200 incidents involving Luas trams have occurred since their introduction four years ago.
The figures show that during the first six months of operation in 2004, Luas trams were involved in 21 incidents.
Over the following three years an average of 47 incidents involving Luas trams were recorded.
To date this year, 43 incidents have occurred, bringing the total to 205.
One person died in an incident involving the Luas and in 41 cases, people had to be taken to hospital.

Yeah, RTE ran one of these stuck-for-real-news exposes on the safety record of the Luas with an agenda that the Luas is unsafe. They also said that the RPA wouldn't state the amount of compensation paid. Given that the majority of the incidents appear to be the fault of the other party (in the case of collisions), I wonder has the RPA claimed much themselves from insured motorists involved?

Many people will opt to be brought to hospital. Part of the compo culture.

Yeah I agree. The last part of the RTE article is desperation alright.

The bit about compensation riled me too - are ANY of the accidents the fault of the RPA? Most to date have been drunkards or drivers chancing their arm...

Eejits who damage the tram and disrupt service for passengers, having disregarded traffic signals and warning signs should be made pay the full economic cost of repairing the tram, any healthcare the company has to provide for the tram driver and the economic cost of the service revenue lost by the tram being out of service and the section closed.

i have a healthy respect fro railed vehicles weighing many tonnes and would keep well out of their way....obviously not everyone does this...i doubt that LUAS was to blame for many or any of those incidents.

How could it be anything other that the fault of the taxi driver, its not like the Luas swerved and hit him

doesn't the compensation have more to do with our health system rather then our transportation system.

Many more don't opt to be brought to hospital. Someone posted here about 2 years ago after he was in a Luas incident, where the poster injured his finger - nobody was taken to hospital.

What I mean is that people believe that if they get carted off in an ambulance even with trivial injuries that it will later help any case that they bring against the insured. "I was so badly injured that an ambulance was called" etc.. Hence, many people will call an ambulance. Part of the compo culture.

I've always thought there was a similar issue of stupidity with all the railway fatalities in the US. I mean, it's not as if they come out at you from unexpected directions or where you didn't expect a train to be. Those tracks are a right giveaway.
