My son hasa laptop with an out of date Norton trial. Is it ok to uninstall Norton and download a free programme. If so which one is best to work alongside windows defender. The laptop has Vista if that makes a difference.

Google AVG Free. I use it on all my PC/laptops and its far less intrusive than mcafee or norton and seems to be working better than either.

I prefer Avast to AVG but either choice is a great pick in freeware antivirus. Preference in UI mostly, but AVG gave me some cheek on a few builds as well.

to uninstall Norton use the Norton Removal Tool (google that)

Thanks fellas. I've done a bit of reading and seems Norton is a pig to get rid of so would I be better off leaving it into an engineer. Dont want to risk the laptop acting up over the holidays. Would AVG and windows defender be enough protection. He downloads a fair bit of music.

    Hi

There is a norton removal tool available - not sure where. Google it. It works really well.

You should be fine with that. It's what I use and I've had no problems whatsoever. Just make sure to do regular virus scans anyway and update when available.

If you're using Firefox then that will also be good enough. When you download music Firefox checks for viruses before it allows you to download anything.

    Hope this helps.

AVGs detection rates have considerably dwindled with each generation, it's not as good as it once was.

i second this. It's generally acknowledged as the most effective free AV out there at the moment, and it has a lighter footprint than most of the others as well.
