i'm thinking of buying a lens for sport i have seen this lens in b&h:

Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro AF Lens for Nikon AF

    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=cart&A=details&Q=&sku=539401&is=REG#reviews

i need a lens for sport and i think if i was to purchase a lens such as the 70-300 f4-5.6 that i would only be buying a 2.8 lens down the road..

however will prices come down after xmas & is this a good lens????

I wouldn't get the tamron from what i'v heard the AF is quiet slow and is only barely enough for sports...If i were you i'd go for the canon 70-200 f/2.8 which is $400 more...

The canon would be the sharpest lens and have the quickest AF but comes at a price

Have you considered the sigma 70-200?Some models aren't as sharp as the tamron but it has got quicker AF from what i'v read....Its an extra $100

i should read posts fully before posting
For an extra $200 you can get a nikon 80-200
I know there's a user on here can't remember his username though :p

I use one, fairly fast and good glass.

Can be picked up in Belfast for about €675 and no risk of any further VAT or duty charges on import

I'd go with the 80-200 Nikon if you can't afford the 70-200. I'm saving up for the 70-200 f/2.8 Nikon:)

    Snap! Same here.:)

If I thought I was just looking at a lens for sport (and thus purely for the fast shutter speed), I'd be snapping up a Nikon 80-200 f2.8, looks like a great lens for the price. But I know I'd like to use it for other stuff too and my 18-200VR has completely sold me on the advantages of VR lenses. That and the fast AF swings it in favour of the 70-200 f2.8 VR.

I also know that that if I bought the Sigma or Tamron, it would just niggle away at me and I'd end up buying the Nikon anyway, so at last I've learned some patience!

I have the sigma version and am very happy with it. The AF is exceptionally fast, compared to what I am used to with other lenses. It's also very sharp to my eye so I can't fault it. I use it with a Canon 40D but I presume the Nikon version would be the same. See the two shots below that were taken with the lens.

Just having a look through the Sigma range, imagine trying to get through airport security with this?!

Its like a feckin Bazooka! Pretty impressive at 2.8 all the way through from 200-500 though.

Thats the MkII that you have linked to which costs a lot more than £380. Try doubling the price!

The one on sale on Jessops site is the MkI version so it's different to the one I have so I can't give you any info on it. Do a bit more research on it. As far as I can remember the MkI's image quality was excellent in the reviews I read but the AF was a little slower.

To be fair though, for <€400 with the current exchange rate, thats one hell of a bargain regardless of MkI or II!!

Whatever about the lens, would you look at that tripod head ?!? yikes.

I've used both the sigma 70-200 and the canon equivalent and image quality isn't all that different in real world photos

autofocus is noticeably slower on the sigma however. In fast moving sports it would be enough to miss a small percentage of shots that the canon would get

I saw them on the Bay a couple of weeks ago. Somebody in NYC had 3 of them at approx €18k each. I was very tempted but it'd cost another ~€4k just to get it through customs

I don't think my bank manager would have been pleased if I'd gone €20k+ overdrawn.

    No way!
    It's the sigma version
If the canon one was at that price they'd be cleared out in minutes :D

He probably meant Canon mount of the Sigma lens.
