Judge Dredd Movie is Green Lit!
    by w3b-B0Tv2 on Fri Dec 19, 2008 6:59 pm | Active Topics

Rebellion and 2000 AD are proud to announce that Judge Dredd is coming to a cinema near you soon!

Together with DNA Films, the movie production company behind such great sci-fi movies such as Sunshine and 28 Weeks Later, Judge Dredd will go into production in 2009.

Jason Kingsley, CEO and Creative Director said, ‘We can’t give away too many details at this point, but we’re looking forward to working with DNA Films to bring Judge Dredd back to the big screen.’

We’ll keep you up to date with breaking news as it happens!

Rebooting Dredd now. Fingers crossed folks. So many stories they could do. I mean, whatever ya say about the Stalone version (It was sh1te) at least they got the look initially right. The Lawmaster and uniform were spot on and Megacity 1 and Cursed earth loked great (esp the long walk).Plus it had Hammerstien! (Still sh1te though)

Bet they'll move it to about 50-70 years in the future though and tone down the uniforms etc

I actually thought there was a lot to like about the Stallone version also. It had plenty of problems though. The Judge Dredd world is so rich and visually interesting...if done right, it could make an epic movie.

bout time 2000 AD started getting movies made.Used to be a massive fan of the comic years ago and the last time I was reading it(bout 5 years ago), there was talk of a few movies being green lighted like Rogue Trooper, new Dreddand I think a Slaine movie.2000AD have some fantastic characters that would translate beautifully to the big screen and given the right treatment could be as good as the Dark Knight.
I liked the last Dredd movie, guaranteed the story was abit overly comic booky, but they did a great job with the look of the comic.Thought the visuals were spot on.Would love to see Judge Death pop up in this one, hopefully they'll do Necropolisor a varation on it.

Well the big problem for me was Dredd himself. The way they softened his character up but that was mainly down to Stalone himself. Remember reading an interview with him a few years later and he was going on about how he had to make the director change his character 'cos the director wanted this total fascist assh0le...... Way to miss a point Sly! But the look was pretty damn good. Poor Danny Cannon: He was a decent director with a couple of good films under his belt and a genuine love for the original but goes to show what impact a headlining star can have I suppose

I think one of the reasons Rebellion bought 2000AD was to make the movies. As you said, there's some great stories there: Slaine, Anderson, Chopper (Song Of The Surfer especially). Rogue Trooper would make an interesting TV series also.

Just please please PLEASE don't jump on the whole "From the creator of Watchman" bandwagon and go about bastardising Halo Jones

I hope they do this well. I'm not a comic fan, and have only ever read about 5 Judge Dredd comics (and a special edition), but whatever I saw, I liked.

    Dirty Harry on a motorbike...

Yep. The original film had a lot going for it... remember they even did a good job on the Angel Gang... of course they weren't given anywhere near enough screen time.

But the presence of Stallone and Schneider was enough to make it one of the worst films ever made.

At that time I reckon Clint Eastwood would have been perfect to play Dredd.

I saw this on tv about a week ago. I think Stallone really hammed it up but as others have said the look of the movie was pretty close to the comics.

I would have liked more of the quirky inhabitants of megacity (I remember one of my favourite storylines when I was younger was about the human taxidermist, weird huh?) and less of Rob Schneider being....well, Rob Schneider (South Park anyone?).

I think with modern CG and something similar to 300 in terms of visuals - not slow-mo though - we could get a very complete Dredd pic.

Assuming they don't try and make it some PG-13 superhero film.

EDIT: @MF: Clint actually would have been great, I mean there are a huge number of similarities between Harry Callahan and Dredd.

Just playing around in Photoshop there...

Allow me to present Ron Perlman as Judge Dredd:

I was trying to think of who would be a good Dredd today and couldn't really come up with anyone but, Hellboy himself? Damn right. Some right arm of the law too!

I've been saying it for years, if there's anything that deserves a remake, it's Dredd. Do it right this time, because quite frankly, there's just no comic book character like him. I also fully support Ron Perlman as Dredd.

F*cking marvellous news. I'm a huge huge fan. The Stallone version wasn't the best, had some excellent parts but still flawed.

Can't wait for this to screen :)

Ixoy is bang on the money, keep the helmet on!

original movie went to sh*t 16 minutes in (thats when dredd took his helmet off)

aside from that visually I can really only fault the design of the bikes and the soundtrack is pretty badass

the film is up on youtube if you know where to look...

Visually the Stallone movie was pretty cool. Unfortunately they changed Dredd himself too much in an attempt to make him more 'human', which really isn't the point.
A remake could do wonders if implemented properly.
