Hi,just wondering if Ive a virus, now I've already googled the problem but nothing came up so hence posting here, every so often my pc (on XP) makes the 'critical stop' noise for no apparent reason, any chance of it being a virus/?? Although nothing is coming up on AVG nor Malbyte's Antimalware

No noticeable slowness of system, just abit annoying,
    Suggestions?

    Thanks in advance
    Ron

Could be some type of system alert or something like that ... What I would suggest is when you hear it next, go to your desktop and right click on my computer , if you dont see my computer , then right click on the start button and then go to properties and choose classic start menu. Right click on my computer and then go to manage (left click). go to event viewer, and then look at the various event logs there .. i would suggest application or system to show the answer. Look at the time in the bottom right hand corner on your computer and compare it with the time stamp on the event log. this may point you in the direction of where a fault might lie. Could be an application shutting down ... the time the error comes ... link it with something on the event logs...let us know how it goes

    hope that helps

MSIINSTALLER could be related to something being installed. It might be related to updates of sorts, virus update , system updates , are you online when you hear this error message ,...

Do you hear this error message shortly after bootup , like say 5 mins ..etc....

Ok sounds like something is trying to install itself .. so here is what you look at , have a look to see if any programs are starting up on bootup, have a quick look at "start", programs, startup

See if anything is in there , make a note of it and google it,
If nothing out of the ordinary is there , you will have to go into the registry,

dont worry , its a piece of cake. click on start and "run"
Type in "command" without the exclamation marks.

    type regedit

    press enter

    A box will come up

    double click on hkey_local_machine
    then software

    then Microsoft

    Then Windows

    then Current Version

    Then Run

On the right hand side of the page is the list of things that are starting up when you reboot. Again look at these and then google them to make sure all are safe, it could be one of them doing the "errors" something you maybe recently installed ... On another box, there is a RunOnce.. here is another thing that should only run once on boot up and then it will delete itself. So if anything is in there , might be worth deleting ..

Remember before you modify the registry , always back it up before any modificatiosn ...

    Hope that helps...

    Andrew
