Laptop Problem - missing file - Win 2k - Dell Inspiron 8100

    Laptop:
Windows 2000 (not sure which variety)
    Dell Inspiron 8100

What did I do before this happened?
Turned on laptop. Got to the login screen for Windows. Tried a couple of different passwords I used to use (it's an old laptop I haven't used in a while). No luck. Decided I'd reboot and try again. Got this error on reboot.

    What have I tried?
I tried what it suggests with the Windows 2000 CD but this had no effect.

    Anything else?
I need to keep the files on it so a fresh install isn't an option. I'd also really rather not have to go taking the HDD out etc at the moment.

    What's the error?
    See attached photo.

    try last known good
    try in safe mode
r - will repair and should keep all your programs and settings

    BUT

    first hit in google
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/269075
The System hive in the registry is damaged or missing.

most likely to be the reg file is too big , which is NOT good
have you backed up the system state any time ?

you would need to see how big the files in c:\winnt\system32\config are
and if there are any others you can swap from , they are the ones like with no extension like SYSTEM SOFTWARE DEFAULT SAM SECURITY
you may also have a repair folder with similar files, backup the one in the config folder and copy the repair one to it and cross your fingers,

This stuff is a lot easier with a live linux CD because you can search the folder for copies of the SYSTEM file , while you could put the drive in another PC as a slave windows on that machine will probably assign it a new drive letter :(
but might be possible with the recovery console on a bootable windows CD

can't remember if a repair install will replace / shrink the system file

not too sure how you delete stuff in an offline reg file, it's one of those things you try not end up in, to prevent delete unused user profiles / uninstall old software, run ccleaner and generally keep an eye on it.

Thanks for the reply. Sorta put this one on the back burner there over Xmas.

Safe mode and last known good aren't options. Same error.

I'm gonna have to get myself a Live linux bootable cd one of these days.
