I bought a mini DVI to DVI cable in the Apple Shop in Grafton Street today, and the guy in the shop said they didn't sell DVI to HDMI cables, but send me around the corner to Peats....

where they said they didn't do them; the ones they had, had the wrong number of pins to connect to the Apple cable, and Apple should have been able to sell me the right connecting cable and to try Beyond 2000...

who said no, they didn't have that, and I should try Maplin's.

At that I balked (bad experiences of Maplin's have made me vow never to shop there ever ever again).

Where can I get a DVI to HDMI cable that will connect my MacBook to my TV (by way of the mini DVI to DVI cable)?

I'm pretty sure Maplins do actually have them, but they are not cheap... The other thing is that DVI to HDMI is a very specific connection and I chose to do something different, as I could then use the bog standard HDMI cables instead, meaning I could use the cables with other devices too (like my PS3). So I got one of these:

    http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/782502/art/sapphire-technology/hdmi-female-dvi-d-male-vi.html

This would connect to your Mini-DVI adapter and convert it to a standard HDMI output. You could then use any standard HDMI cable - which can be found for as cheap as €2 apparently (in Tesco, awhile back).

The DVI to HDMI adapter itself is also sold in Maplins, but they charge more than €25 if I remember correctly, which IMO is a rip off...

I said, awhile back ;). HDMI cable prices vary wildly BTW. Unless you need a really long one though, buy the absolute cheapest one you can find - especially if you only need one up to 2 -3m long. Argos has one at around €7.50 I think, but it's only 0.75m long. They are very cheap on the likes of Ebay too but if you are shopping in stores, shop around and no matter what sales people tell you, do not buy the expensive ones. The PS3 forum here is a good source of info for HDMI cable prices too... You'll still need the DVI to HDMI adapter I mentioned in my earlier post though.
