Australia! ... and cycling there...

    Anyone been?

I'm going to be popping over for a year seeing as things aren't the may west in this little country of ours and I'm hoping to use the better climate to get more into cycling.

Was just looking at prices for bikes there and despite seeing a few brand names I don't recognise the bikes seem to be considerably cheaper brand new. From what I remember from being there previously their cycle lane system is far more vast and comprehensive.

Anyone know if it's a big sport over there? Are cyclists shunned by motorists there as they are here? I'm actually quite excited about having the opportunity to take some free times and cycle around a new, warm, sunny country! :)

Helmets are a legal requirement over there, and it is enforced :)

I believe it's a big sport there, they certainly have plenty of pro riders. The tour down under will be on next month. I cycled a bit in Melbourne years ago along a nice coastal track. I'm told it goes on for miles and miles southwards. I'm also told that there is a big club scene in Melbourne.

Ah, thats not the worst piece of information, with any look they're cheaper seeing as it's a legal requirement

I did some cycling around Albany in south WA, about four hours drive south of Perth, some beautiful beaches and lonely coastline roads to explore there.

Thats where I'm going. I do remember there being a great cycle track near where I was staying. It went right into the city as well which was probably over 20km and I don't know how far it went the other direction.

Might look into a club while I'm there as well, haven't joined one in Ireland yet but I've only recently gotten hooked on cycling

On the site I'm looking at they actually do seem a bit more expensive than wiggle, may be worth investing before I leave

It's a long way to cycle. Are you sure flying won't be more practical? Or at least a boat.

Seriously, which bit are you going to?

eta: just read, Melbourne. That shouldn't be too hot. I did a trip to the East Coast (Byron Bay) in March about five years ago, and it was a great temperature for outdoorsing.

    Lucky sod.

Ha, ya fecker, I was going to type 'cycling therein' but I wasn't sure if therein was a word at the time!

Yeah, I hoping to spend a fair bit of time in melbourne, I know their weather isn't the best in the country there but I reckon that could be a positive thing in terms of outdoor exercise. You're all welcome to come.... I'm not paying but I'm not stopping ya!

My first boards spin in oz, I could live with that...
