its not happy running vst's basically
crackling , popping , crashes and freezes

and this is just 8 drum tracks two guitars , bass , and a synth .

and funny enough , cubase seems to just sound cleaner for some weird reason i havent figured out yet

Been using Pro Tools LE and HD in college and I've tried using Cubase. Started out in Cool Edit/Adobe Audition so it's not totally a money thing.

Weird about the Vsts, I didn't start to get cracks and pops until the 60-70 track count and that was running alot of guitar sims with impulses as well as usual verbs, lots of EQ's and delays and stuff. That was with all the graphics running in vista aswell without optimising it for audio.

I've never used Reaper but have been a long time user of FL Studio until starting to do live work again and have been giving Ableton Live 7 a run round the block for a few months and the only time I get the same problem is if I run some extra mem hungry vst plugins. This is a new optimised lappy with several gigs of ram, so it's not the lappy or the software. I'm mostly doing field recording based Ambient so it's not like I'm killing the thing with Psytrance :D. Could your issues perhaps be similar? Again I've never used Reaper so this is just a long shot.

I'm really happy with Cubase 4.5 these days. It seems pretty rock solid. I have REAPER and I've paid for the license, but it's never really floated my boat. It does loads and I probably should love it, but I've used Cubase for so long, I just prefer it.

nah , the machine is a dual 2.4 gig xeon with 3 gig ram and dual 100rpm scsi disks . ( an retired webserver ) - with xp pro tweaked .

funny how cubase sounds more real and natural than reaper - must figure out why . --- i t dont make sense.

Well from reading other's posts - the fact it's very affordable is pretty cool.

Well as I understand it, it's shareware so someone who's thinking of trying Music Prod can give it a spin without a financial commitment.
Overall most things I've heard about it are positive.
However I have no personal experience.

And yes you are looking a bit fat ok .....;)

(retaliating by calling a Mod Fat gets an instant ban)

It's not shareware. You can download a trial & that will not expire, however they expect you to pay. There is a cheap non-commercial price & a more expensive professional license. I'm using it at the moment with transition year students. They can download it & try it out for themselves. Something they can't do with Pro Tools, Logic etc. However it is a PITA having to learn a third DAW.
