Is it a breach of rights?

i'm just wondering is it illegal to sack someone for being in a relationship with a fellow employee?
this is assuming that the couple know how to keep their work and private lives separate?

I think it is illegal but it might be worth checking out the employee handbook - each company has different rules but not sure on the legal side of thinigs
The place I work in is full of couples and when I dabbled in that myself (never again :() I asked HR about it and they said to me that they had no problems with it just as long as we weren't getting it on in the corner of the canteen or anything :)

i've been scouring through the handbook and not found anything on it
i've been with someone from work for 4 of my 6 months there. we did our best to keep it quiet but we now have reason to believe that people know. so we're both pretty worried

Is there any other couples in the place? Is there anyone in the HR department that you or your OH could 'hypothetically' ask the question of?

there's actually about 3 or 4 other [known] couples. and they even get their timetables synchronised. but they're all at the same 'level' if you know what i mean; he's a crew trainer and i'm crew so... i don't know

It might be worth asking HR off the record if you are that worried but if the both of you are managing to keep it a strictly professional relationship in work, I wouldn't worry.
Best of Luck - office romances can be great but everyone in work feels they have a right to an opinion on it

Unless there is a specific contractual rule or HR policy then there is nothing to fear. Even if there was the the labour court would take a very dim view of someone getting fired where their personal relationship caused no detriment to their employer.

Could jhergarty's question not be valid though? If the OP is going out with her boss, or even someone on a higher grade it could be a problem.

he has no influence over my employment if that's what you mean. he's just more experienced and helps train new crew
