Likely to get ANY job in May/June?

    Hey folks,

I'll be finishing college in May, studying a BA in Computer Science and History.

The plan for a while has been for myself and the rest to get full-time jobs ASAP, work until January (saving every penny along the way!), and then head to Australia for the 1yr work visa.

But the worry now is that there will be literally no jobs for us once we graduate

Just wondering what people think? I'm not particularly looking for an IT job (in fact I'm not keen on working in IT at all, go figure...), but would like any full-time, low-responsibility job to get enough saved for a few weeks/months of travel before starting work.

The alternative is, save enough for flights and a couple of weeks' accommodation, and then head over straight after college and just start working straight away.

At the moment I have a part-time job, but (a) I hate it, so would really loathe having to work a sh*t-load of hours @ minimum wage for 6 months, and (b) as I'm in final year and need to concentrate on studies, I only work a handful of hours per week; enough to get me through, but not enough to save any significant amount!

Any thoughts or words of wisdom?

    Cheers

    Dave

p.s., no need to point out that it's a minor/insignificant problem to have -- I'm aware that lots of people here are unemployed.

Pick somewhere that needs your skillset, and apply there for a working visa with your CV in hand, and a covering letter about what your degree was about.

My advice would be to be thankful that you have a job fullstop...it might be crap and money not great but it beats sitting at home with nothing!!

Also as for Oz don't expect to walk into jobs, this slow down is near enough world wide. The best thing you have going for you is that you'll probably turn your hand to anything to make a few pound?

If you managed to get 5k euro put away + the price of a flight out you would be sorted as long as you didn't go mad partying. That would be 10k ozzie dollars at the current rate and if there is a few of you going out then that would keep bills to a minimum.

For skilled migrant work I would advise Perth on the west coast and for 'any job will do' hit the east coast Brisbane/Sydney/Canberra even Melbourne.

Before you go though do your research and try your best to get work sorted!!

I would agree with Farls - the downturn is global and Australia is also looking at a recession right now. You can't assume you'll walk into a job anywhere.

Have you applied for any graduate programmes/positions? The companies who are still taking in grads are already taking applications for jobs next summer, so get onto their websites and apply sooner rather than later!
