Abandoned cars

Maybe I've only started noticing it recently but I've spotted a lot of cars that seem discarded on a few of Dublin's dual major routes. The N4, M4, N7 and M7 have a few.

Are these cars abandoned or stolen or parked? Some can be there for weeks. They all have plates so presumably it shouldn't be too hard to track down the owners?

Is the recession biting that hard that people don't have money for fuel to get them home? :)

this was happening a few years ago in london, I was driving a recovery truck over there, and we got a council contract to collect abandoned cars in and around nw london.

What we reckoned people were doing was, buying very cheap run arounds and driving them til they broke down and leaving them where they stopped.

Most likely these cars were not insured or tested, we never collected one that had valid tax thats for sure.

Its possible the craze has taken off here now!

Theres a Punto Mk1 at the ORR junction on the N7 also - some weeks at this stage.

Easy to do, change the registration documents to a made up name and address and then just park it in a public place for the council to worry about it.

Very common these days as it usually costs money to have the car taken to a scrap yard.

Shamefull all the same, like dumping your rubish at the side of the road.

If a car is abandoned, can someone claim it for themselves?

does anyone know who to contact to have abandoned cars removed? Is it the city council or someone else?

Or if you are living in a private estate, you have to call your Management Agent to arrange removal.

Or push it out of the estate and leave it safely by the public road ;)

If you go near an abandoned car, ie to push it onto road or what ever, can you be arrested for anything?
I cant go near your car and you cant go near mine, whats the story if no one owns the car?

You do it when no one is around;)

And you'd generally know what cars you can push out and which you can't

Often see abandoned cars on N9 (usually between Timolin and Ballitore for some reason). There was a red BMW a few months back, abandoned on a Wed, windows smashed and lights stripped out by Fri, wheelless by Mon, removed a week later.
