O.k well i'm 17 and Tall and i get a lot of people telling me i should be a guard
Once a guard said to me "what do you want to do after school" and i replied "i don't know" and he replied "you'd make a great guard"
What makes tall people good guards?
    Thanks

I'll resist some really obvious answers to this. The stereotypical answers are just too easy;)

Well basically id reckon they think people would be scared of you and stop acting up around you, plus a tall person is like a cctv camera for the gards, without the recording feature!

Well timmy understands me,sorry about the original question

Im asking why do people think tall people should be guards?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 417 ✭✭the locust

I suppose all the obvious answers
    - taller the more respect you naturally command on the streets
    - physically (dont mean to generalize but) taller usually means stronger, dominant and more likely to find it easier to restrain someone.
    - like timmywex said you have good line of sight over a crowd
    - i suppose psychologically two big tall guards getting out of a car or walking down the street can diffuse a potentially violent situation

However you heard the old sayin the bigger they are the harder they fall. I thought the height requirement was a great thing but obviously has it drawbacks too... if all guards were the same size/height they'd be easy to spot in plainclothes work.

On a sidenote - why are all US cops on TV not so much tall but huge big beefy/stocky guys? Is it something they look for on entry? or diet or what?

Are we still living in the 1960's or something? ''Off to the barracks with ya, and on yer bike!''

Seriously, it's just old stereotyping. Back from the days when there was a height requirement of 5'11' I think?

Guys, the lad is only 17 for crying out loud.

We have a saying in the Defence Forces - ''there's no such thing as stupid questions, only stupid answers''.

OP, I'm not a policeman but I'd say your starting out right by asking questions ;)

Btw, would you consider the military?....

    /Run's to the bunkers :P

The military is worth a look, definitely an option right after AGS, DFB, Prisons, Nursing, teaching, civil service, bin men......:P

Unfortunetly we're not, but your only 17 so you've plenty of time.

In the mean time if your interested in persuing a military career you can starting by joining your local RDF unit or check us out on www.military.ie

Hard luck lads, we got him :P

You should only persue a career if you're interested in it yourself, not because someone else is telling you to.
