They both seem much the same, apart from the obvious disc brakes on the cannondale. Don't know how the shocks compare.

For that price range, you might be better keeping an eye out for a second hand bike, to get better value for money. irishdh.com, madmtb.com, mtbireland.com, epicmtb.com all have forums with reasonably active buy and sell.

I got a GT Avalanche 1.0 Disc 2008 from CRC 2 weeks ago, I'm v happy, but then again, I don't know a whole lot about mountain bikes. I did a bit of searching online and it seemed to have pretty good reviews, especially from bikeradar.

BeOne Ten Hardtail Bike - Ltd Edition 2007 is another option.

You'll be compromising on something at that price point, no matter what. Poor shocks, good brakes. Good brakes, ok shock, poor wheels.

The wheels and brakes don't seem fantastic on the GT. The beone seems to be a reasonable all rounder.

(Having said that, I know little about wheels and shocks)

Yes, keep an eye here: http://www.cyclesuperstore.ie/shop/pc/shbikes.asp

    Nice trek there for 650.
The Kona Caldera on the website is way overpriced. Id offer 500 - 600 for it. (Its 4 years old and cost 1300 new. And with an S works Stumpjumper with full XTR there for the same price. Go figure!)

I recently bought a Specialized tarmac pro 2nd hand and saved a packet. 2nd hand is defo the way to go.

The Cannondale has the disc hubs and brakes already. I don't know much about their headshoks so I can't reccommend one over the other. The Fat Boy also has good shocks and a higher quality drivetrain but I wouldn't go with the Tektro Hydraulics. Of those three, I'd go for the Cannondale.
