Basically i'm a trainee looking to make a bit of extra cash. Was thinking of putting up posters in local shops/businesses offering my services for general book-keeping/payroll management (basically to tody things up before the stuff is given to a proper accountant!)

Anyone do anything similar outside of their actual employment?

are you gonna declare that extra income to the revenue? :D

I only do it for family business really but I've been asked bout doing vat returns & individual tax returns for other people.

Where you gonna find the time? Have you computer package yourself or would you wanna work in their office/house?

I dont have a contract so that should be no problem.

    Is Sage/Payroll expensive to buy?

Hi, you will see lots of threads here with reccommendations for different account packages & payroll packages. If you intend to do this for more than one company, dont forget to get multi user on each package. I wouldnt buy anything until you get your first client.... Best of Luck

Do you still need professional indemnity insurance to do this type of work? If you are a trainee accountant, I would have thought your regulatory body would not allow you use their name when seeking this work unless you were qualified and/or held a practicing cert?
I would like to know if this is not actually the case.

It would seem that the OP is looking to offer Bookkeeping services, not accountancy services, so a practising cert is not required.
I set up my own Bookkeeping company on the side a year and a half ago, I currently study ACCA and work in practice, but also hold membership of the IATI which enables me to offer services to the public.
If you do start this as a sideline, i would recommend registering with the revenue as a sole trader, and submitting your own accounts.
This means as you start getting some work, you can advertise for more clients and not worry about being done for tax evasion.

Professional Indemnity insurance would be adviseable if you run as a sole trader, however if you set up a Limited company (Can be done for Bookkeeping, not Accountancy) and only have one or two clients at the minute, you can get by without it, assuming you are well tuned into what your doing!!!

    Hope this helps.

Looking to do some bookkeeping etc on the side aside from my full time job as an accountant, where it the best place to advertise? I am based in Cork if that helps! Thanks.
