Maybe some of the older pistol shooters out there can help me. I wear varifocal specs and can't get a focus on the front sight when I'm in a comfortable shooting position. Has anyone any solution to this, I don't want to pop into my nearest SpecSavers with a 9 mil looking for advice.

Have you considered bringing your slide with you to the opticians? I'm myopic & I told my optician about my pistol shooting sport. They were very interested & helpful in getting my contact lens perscription right for a clear front sight focus. Ask them first thoguh before you show up with the slide :)

There is no need to do this,
get a pen with a push button on top,
It will be about the size of your front sight,
hold it at arms length in front of you,
between the fingertips of both hands,
    with your two palms touching.

This will be the point at which your front sight will be within an inch or two.

    Dvs.

Thanks Pakas and Dvs, two useful suggestions there. Don't know why I never thought of contacts, would let me use standard shooting glasses. Good on ya.

G17. The next time I'm shooting against you I think I'll wear my contacts & open my eyes. I thought it only fair up to now shooting eyes closed seeing as you were handicapped enough with your tuperware dishwasher proof piece. :P

Strange as it may seem, there are opticians who shoot...

I think the optician Bounty Hunter went to is a shooter, and he ended up very happy with his specs. Mine wasn't a shooter, but I brought the rifle and some articles in and went through requirements with him and my lens turned out very well too. Bounty Hunter's optician is probably your best bet though, think he mentioned he was out in Santry before.

I had to get RX inserts for my shooting glasses and luckily enough the optician had been on a clay shooting corporate day. When I explained how I wanted the lenses made she understood perfectly and did a great job on them.
It's worth checking around to try find one who understands what you need. Mine is in Trim by the way.
