Construement - is it a word?

Or did I just make it up?

Writing an essay, used it, Microsoft Word didn't know it.

Plugged it into google, several hits (but not many).

Define: Construement turns up the definition of construe, but not construement.

Anyone know if its a word.

Nah, sounds very makey-uppy to me.

Makey-uppy, however, is a word. Kinda.

    I've never seen it before!

    Doesn't sound right to me.

    Would construal be more useful?

Sounds like it could supposably be a proper word.

Of course it is, it has letters in it...

    Would it not be construction?

It's a word, but I think you spelled it wrong.

    You're thinking of constipation, right?

Its made up, but don't let that stop you. Last week I put "illculturation" into an exam answer, google's never heard of it.

    Yeah, that sounds right.

What are you trying to say OP?

Not sure if it's a word but it is definitely an anagram of Rectum Sonnet. Speaking of which.

A poem about my hairy bum,
to relieve me of the tedium,
of threads and posts of racist bile,
that pop up in here all the while,
my bum may not be handsome or pretty,
it may be smelly and may be shitty,
yet it has a certain style or grace,
some say it's nicer than my face,
a pimple here a brown stain there,
    blotchy skin with sticky hair,
    in between the fleshy hole,
lies a bum with heart a bum with soul,
so til the day when death will come,
you are my love, you are my bum.

Flutter will be along later to proof read, edit and improve it later on.

Hmmm, that doesn't look like iambic pentameter to me.

You're right! And it's not written in the 3rd person!

    :D

By the time Flutter is finished with it, it'll have the finest iambic parameters you've ever laid your eyes upon Earthhorse. Pighead just releases raw turds out into this big ole world. Flutts polishes them to make them shine.

Those two would have been better.
Since I decided it wasn't a word, but rather a ghoulish attempt to mash two words to make one, I restructured the sentence to make sure that I could just use plain old construe.

    Thanks anyway.

Construement is a perfectly cromulent word.

In that case, I'll take two.

It's a perfectly cromulent word. And I hope you will not object if I also offer my most enthusiastic contrafribularities. I'm anispeptic, frasmotic, even compunctuous to have caused you any pericombobulation.

    I shall return interfrastically. *exits*

If you say it five times while looking in a mirror it becomes a real word.

Didn't there used to be an etymology forum around here some place?
Or was it over run by dyslexic insect lovers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,748 ✭✭✭tony1kenobi

    Thanks anyway.

That thingy under your post looks like it says "the minister for banging your ass"....along with the dog collar image it's rather arousing.

    Not sure why though.

Yep. It's under Soc > Languages. Used to get questions like this in English too.

Who says boards is too watered down?

Capt'n Midnight, you're a star. I tried to learn those lines off every time I watched it. Now I have ammunition to wreck some kids' heads tomorrow:D

Don't see how etymology is relevant, not a word.

You might change your mind if you knew what was hidden behind "the dog collar";)

Excellent poem Pighead, regretfully,or maybe not, Flutter cannot become involved in those events for some time.

    Reason

Ooooh Blackadder and Simpson quotes together. You win. Damn you.

Don't see how etymology is relevant, not a word.

I'd have thought if you were asking whether a word was a word or not, that etymology would have been the more relevant place to ask than the general topics forum, not that it matters...

Well now for my apathetic reply: To Spell Czechs!

lol there's still a spell czechs forum too? So there's three places it could have been asked! I hope The_Minister is taking notes, there'll be a pop quiz after post #40...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,255 ✭✭✭✭The_Minister

Spell Czechs is AFAIK a private forum to which I do not have access.
Etymology doesn't mean what you think it does.

I forgot about the English forum.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,909 ✭✭✭✭Wertz

Ah I know what etymology is and means...it was just a lame attempt at humour with the dyslexic insect thing and Tar had to call me out on it...
