Solution for managing my windows install

    Hi,
I have a work laptop that I use for some personal stuff also.

I would like to keep my personal surfing activities private and am thinking of vmware or something.

I want the ability to be able to quickly flash or reset windows should things start slowing down. I can then in a very short time have a clean install of windows.

I would like to do the same for the work setup aswell.

Will vmware be quick enough for everyday working? It's a high specced business laptop. Has two gigs of ram and a dual core.

What's the best solution should I ever want to quickly flash the host os for vmware?

    Any ideas appreciated.

    Thanks.

unless you have Vista enterprise you will need a second license for the vm copy of windows, perhaps a trial version of server ?

or install ubuntu in a vm or have a dual boot using wubi on the cd is the easiset way for that

If you'll be using the laptop while at work and connecting to the Internet via the work network your surfing activities will be visible unless you encrypt all your traffic, which is mighty suspicious in itself, as any auditing will be done via traffic logs.

Virtual machines will let you do this, you just make a copy of the virtual machine once you have it set up as you want it, then if you want to restore to the starting state you just delete the copy of the vm which you were using actively and make a copy of the backup and use that.

Another option is drive imaging (clonezilla, driveimage xml are free utilities, Acronis TI is reputedly the best paid solution). In this scenario you'd be dual booting though if you wanted to keep absolute separation between work and personal use and not use a virtual machine.

Yes if you're only running one vm at any one time. If you want to use more than one concurrently I'd say you may need more memory.

Not sure what you mean tbh.
