Earlier today, the RTE News website was carrying a story that a suspicious device had been found in Mountjoy Garda station and the Army Bomb Disposal Squad were at the scene. The story was listed here but has since been removed. The actual headline is still showing on the RTE website here.
An Army bomb disposal team is at Mountjoy Garda Station dealing with what is being described as a 'suspicious object'.

Does anyone know what was up?

The army bomb squad was called to Mountjoy Garda Station in Dublin today to examine a suspicious object.

It is understood that the object was posted to somebody's home, and handed into officers shortly after 2pm this afternoon.

The station was sealed off and placed under quarantine, while a number of surrounding streets were also closed off.

Gardaí were diverting traffic, and motorists were advised to avoid the area.

A Garda spokesperson said the object would be removed to Cherry Orchard Hospital in Dublin for examination once it was deemed safe to do so.

    Probably a hoax alright.

It reminds me of a certain member years ago responding to a suspicious box on O'Connell St., Dublin with wires sticking out and a ticking noise. This member walked right up to the box, picked it up and put it into the boot of the car. He then drove, with lights and sirens, to the Depot. I heard when he arrived he caused a massive security alert and the Depot had to be evacuted. The EOD was called and device was destroyed with it still in the boot of the car.

Turns out it was a powder in an envelope that was handed in, and it posed no threat.
Tests carried out on a suspicious envelope handed in to gardaí at Mountjoy Garda Station in Dublin earlier today have proven negative, a Defence Forces statement said.

"At 3.55 pm today, an army bomb disposal team examined a suspicious envelope containing a powder substance," the statement said.

"The envelope was handed in by a member of the public to the Garda station. Tests for explosive, biological and other toxins proved negative and the powder did not pose any immediate threat."

The remains of this envelope and the powder have been handed over to gardaí on the scene for further investigation into the incident.

The alarm had earlier caused traffic to back up around the area as gardaí sealed off streets as a precaution.

Is CBRN still the preserve of the defence forces or have AGS their own teams?

Ooh, I don't know. They could have hopped across the street and the nice nurse could have sorted out the nasty carpet burns.

Passed by the scene today on the way to work. It was like something out of Die Hard or something. Fire brigades and ambulances and Gardai all over the place with their sirens blaring. Apparently yer man who found the package had to get hosed down from head to toe as they thought it might have been anthrax. Thankfully it was only a hoax.

DF handle it first and foremost AFAIK. However there was a joint exercise between Govt agencies in 2006 for a CBRN incident. Gardai intercepted, but EOD handled the 'device' if I remember correctly.
