Garmin do one, but it's only for sale in the US, probably because it uses radio frequencies that are only free for this kind of use in the US. Don't even think about trying to import one unless you want to get into trouble with ComReg.

If the dog hasn't got one already you can get the owner to get the dog an id tag and microchip and also the dog might need a refresher course in recall.
identitag to a really robust tag.
Gps would be great to have on pets maybe one day we'll get it here can only imagine how many pets would be reunited with their owners.
Mind you as with microchipping and id tags some people don't care enough about their pets to even to that at the mo :-(

There are a huge range available from simple indicators that give the GPS position when you phone the unit which are available in Maplin to super on screen units that can show the positions of up to 6 dogs. There is also a UK company that are about to launch a dog tracker which will be linked to a website.

Many of the "electronic training collars" ( I have now upset everyone on here by mentioning them !) have a bleeper collar as an option. When you lose the dog you push a button & the collar emits a loud beep which can be heard up to half a mile away !. Tell him to google as there are loads of options available.

As to Comreg - then wouldn't have a clue !

Maybe, but it is important. There are, for example, lots of illegal "long range" cordless phones being sold in this country that interfere with the Emergency Services new Tetra communications system, and you wouldn't want that on your conscience.

If there's a system out there that's licensed for use in Ireland then fine, but please don't event think about importing something that isn't licensed for use here. Be wary even on importing from the UK, as these might in turn be imported from the US or Far East, as was the case for many of the cordless phones mentioned above.

there are locator collars that hunters in america/sweden places like that use on their hounds. you basically follow a beep from a transmitor on the dogs collar with a reciever.

There won't be a system licensed in Ireland. God can you imagine the red tape involved in that. The only "radio" communication is between the handset & pet. Most have a range of about half a mile so not likely to disable the emergency services.
