I was thinking of getting away for Christmas. Are Youth Hostels easy to get at this time of year? Could you just pay at the door or would you need to book carefully?

There will be plenty of people (i.e. Australians and South Americans, it's there summer) but just enough so that you don't have to worry about there being no vacancies.

Where would be a good place to go? In Europe, say?

Ah here, there's whole encyclopedias devoted to that! Grab a map and bring up wikipedia and just pick yourself!

Go to www.hostelworld.com and view hostels by their rating.

Go to a hostel with the highest rating and you can't go wrong. The rating is a percentage awarded by people who have stayed in them and it's based on location, fun, cleanliness, value for money etc. Very reliable I have found.

Just pick a city that would be popular such as Barcelona, Amsterdam etc so that you're almost guaranteed to have Aussies, Kiwis, Sith Ifricans etc who are too far away from home to go home for Christmas.

I went to Amsterdam at Christmas a couple of years ago and the hostel was very busy. It's called The Flying Pig: http://

Edit: just checked on hostelworld.com for hostels that are open on Christmas Day and there are literally 30/40 hostels open in Barcelona for esample i.e. All of them so you you'll have no problem getting accommodation. And they start at a measly 6 euro for a dorm bed.

    Go for it!
