What's that word: Using a part to refer to the whole or vice versa

As the title suggests, does anyone know the word that describes a term where a word for part of something is used to refer to the whole, eg: Calling a labourer or a sailor a hand, or using a word for the whole thing to refer to a part, eg: calling a police officer 'The Law'.

    Thanks!
