Best mulled wine recipe

Looking for a nice mulled wine recipe - not gluhwine as I don't have any brandy - what do you add? What spices, and are oranges the only fruit?

Nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon, oranges and lemons. Add to taste. It doesn't really work without brandy, though, I find.

Any strong alcohol is good - over here it's usually made with rum - last year i've seen whiskey being used.
