not if you wear a clown costume collecting the cash

It isn't a job. Same as traffic warden. It's a vocation. You need to be the sort of **** that's born for it.

    for shame.

No, it's a perfectly fine job. Somebody has to do it and I see no reason why these people should be chastised and ridiculed because of it. Unless you come to collect my debt, then you're a scumbag, asshole cúnt who should have their balls ripped off and shoved down their throat.

I know somebody has to do it but in general it would be nasty enough people who take that kind of job.

debt collection is necessary, plenty of serial credit defaulters out there who make small companies lives a misery.
No regulation here though thats the problem

    No.
Pay your way and they will never call to you.

People have to pay for what they get. Why should any business have to carry free loaders at a loss.

This is a schizophrenic thread, your title and OP ask two different questions.

    (1)Debt collecting isn't bad.
    (2) Yes its a horrid job.

    Like debt collectors:

    1. Do you like hospital food?

    or

    2. Do you wanna wake up with a crowd round you?

I assume the OP is talking about legal debt collectors.

There are people who might refuse to pay a company for providing crappy service or people who are told they are in debt because of a mistake by the company who get harrassed by debt collectors.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,257 ✭✭✭✭ejmaztec

I assume the OP is talking about legal debt collectors.

In my experience there's a very narrow line. A lot of legal ones look like they've got a loyalty card with the A&E, but they could be big softies in reality.

It's a few steps above not paying your bills anyway.

There are people who might refuse to pay a company for providing crappy service or people who are told they are in debt because of a mistake by the company who get harrassed by debt collectors.

How is that the debt collectors fault? They are employed to do a job, not investigate the reasons why you didnt pay your debt. The reasons are between the person and the company they owe money too.

Yes, I think that by the time the debt-collectors get involved, it's gone way beyond the threatening letter stage, and beyond the time that the debtor should have contacted a solicitor.

Unfortunately, some people think that if they ignore the paper-work, the debt will mysteriously vanish.

I assume by debt collector you mean Bailiffs?

Is there even such a thing anymore? I've never heard of bailiffs calling to people, in Ireland anyway. I remember a show on the BBC a couple of years back about bailiffs, they were perceived in much the same way traffic wardens are. I wouldn't call it a bad job, but you wouldn't want to have a heart to do it.

This past week I've been working in credit control and there are people who will run up bills with no intention of paying for them. However, there are also people who let bills build up and refuse to pay for non existent service, or who say they were lied to when they signed up for said service. I don't argue with them simply because I don't doubt that they were lied to:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,729 ✭✭✭Pride Fighter

I'd never be stupid enough to run up a debt I could not pay. If a debt collector ever asked me for anything I'd smash him.

    In my exp YES!!!!

theres 1 debt collecter my sis and i had the bad luck of dealing with last year.

she would say she would call at six in the evening wouldnt show up till half 9

On one occasion she called an hour earlier than she was ment to and i was not there and she called me and screamed down the phone at me

One week my sisters house was broken into and everything stolen(including 1,500euro in cash her husband won from a poker tournment) and my sis didnt have the money to give her that week - and she THREATNED her with the police

One night she called me at 1.30 AM to say she would pop in on wednesday , instead of thursday-why she couldnt wait till a more reasonable hour i dont know.

    Just my experiences

EDIT - i mean like <snip> (u get a loan n ur payments collected every week) not a baliff

    Just my experiences

Now look at it from the side of the person you owe money too: you owe money are are not paying it.

How long long would you be willing to wait if the company owed money to you?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 297 ✭✭oztots

If you are legally allowed to rob stuff then no, it sounds like a cool job.

Get the feeling theres going to be an employment surge in this sector. Way to many people borrowed byond their means and cant pay for it with increasing interest rates.

Then again theres no point taking stuff when nobody has money to buy it.

you didnt read the full post

Yes I did, you edited your post 2 mins after I replied. If I could reply to an edit you make 2 mins before you make it, I would be consoderabley richer thasn I am.

So if you were paying the money as per the agreement why did they bother spending money chasing you for it?

Plus, the company askign where the money is your supposed to be paying them isnt a debt collector as such, Certainly not the way the OP meant it.

I dont see why your persaonal problems ahve anything to do with them. You agreed to pay them every week , how you do so is your problem, making sure they get the money from you is theirs.

Callign times are more of a customer service issue tbh.

Bad credit rating, bad address, bad family, etc, etc. Some people can't get a loan from a bank, needs the loan badly, and pay 150% APR. There are some that legally charge 200% APR. Scum, but meh, people will goto them in times of need.

    =-=

As for the topic, some companies skip the letters, and go straight to the debt collector.

    =-=

Nice job, but you must be mentally and physically tough, as as noted already, you'll be collecting from scum, and scum tend to be strong physically.

was my sister not me, she cleared it with the company and agreed to pay double the next week, and half an hour later the woman comes and threatns her, she had not been told by the company of the agreement to pay double the week after and threatned her...but it is against the law to threaten people to obtain money

I dont know why im bothering to explain myself, i came on with my experiences of it to add to the thread and im getting questioned at every turn.

Dont see why they are scum. If the people borrowing werent a huge risk they wouldnt be going to these people. You cant borrow at bank rates without haveing the credit ratign to do so, and if you do, youd be in a bank anyway.

I think it needs to be done, however some leniancy should be shown. In a lot of cases it is. Why take loans for big suvs and large houses when it is not needed and you cannot afford it?
