Setting up Wireless Router

    Hi,
I got a Sweex wireless router today but I am having difficulty setting it up. I have followed the instructions as in the manual, connecting the router to internet via the WAN port and connecting the router to the computer via one of the remaining ports. However the computer makes no acknowledgement of being connected to any device so I cannot access the router in order to set it up as outlined in the manual. The lights on the front of the router flash green continually once turned on regardless of what the router is or is not connected to.

A friend has suggested that the problem may lie in the fact that I am not connecting the router directly to a modem. I live in an aprtment complex and we have internet throughout the building on a LAN so I've just connected the router to a LAN plug-in point with internet access. Could this be the problem?
And even if this is the problem should the computer not al least recognise the router and be able to configure its settings even if it cant connect to the internet through it?

I hope that all this makes sense and that someone may be able to help me.

    Thanks very much,
    derryo

    READ THIS CAREFULLY

You dont want to cut off the network in your house, and sill have no router

Take note (write them down) of any existing TCI/IP settings on your existing computer before changing any...

Perhaps, at some stage, you needed to input, specific IP setting , to log onto the apartment network.

You will need to , undo this ,(which will cut your computer off then network) to log on to the router, and put the same details into the router, so it will connect to the apt. network.

If there is a password for the network.. you will need that too.. ,

Could you give the model number of the Sweex?

Did the computer previously work with the internet access point in the apartment? If it did - as per the post above - did someone set it up for you or were you able to just plug it in and use the net?

(I ask this so as to confirm that the ethernet port on the computer is working).

Have you tried connecting the router to the computer without it being connected to the apartment connection? This of course would only allow you to access the router settings.

It may be that your routing is being done on your local network and that you will have to use the sweex as a wireless point rather than a router. This would involve turning off the routing in the sweex.

    Hey derryo here again,
Turns out that the router was faulty so I've returned it to the shop and gotten my money back. Thanks for all the suggestions anyway.:)
