Dress Codes in Clubhouse and indeed Golf Course.

At our recent AGM it was passed that the dress code for the clubhouse be amended to read that Neat Tailored Denims be allowed in the club house only.

Does any of your clubs have a relaxed rule on denims either in the clubhouse or indeed on the course or the wearing of trainers/runners in the clubhouse.

    any thoughts?

My club has a neat dressed rule but its very relaxed. In saying that the vast majority of people would be dressed appropriately on the course. I can understand then that when they'd get changed that they'd change into jeans and visit the bar. It very much depends on the club but so long as its neat most clubs wont pass much comment from experience. They arent really in a position to be turning away people from courses these days over something small and petty like jeans. If its neat I dont see a problem. Robert Karlsson and Greame McDowell were swanning round the players lounge in Jeans one of the nights of the Irish open in Adare this year so if its good enough for them it should be for us too!:D

I'd agree with jeans in the clubhouse, should be allowed as in a lot of golf clubs its not only players/members that would be in the clubhouse which is understandable...

But to allow jeans on the golf course would be shocking, it'd bring the club down a level imo.

Sometimes I ask if the dress rules are too strict but then again I realise that if they weren't then there would be people who would push the boundaries and soon anything would be acceptable.

The dress codes up in Northern Ireland seem to be a bit stricter than down south and I don't think any courses allow denims inside or on the course.

I do agree that there needs to be rules and although I wear denim quite a lot I think it's ok in the clubhouse but not on the course.

This discussion reminded me of this John Daly video...

I don't wear jeans on the GC , mainly because they are uncomfortable / hot / heavy and soak up more water than a bath sponge

However let me tell you all a little story.

About 12 years ago I was playing golf on the east coast of Scotland . I was actually playing Carnousitie and the group in front of me were getting ready to tee off. Two of them were members, both in jeans obviously just finished work . Did this degrade the level of that course ? No of course not !

What I am trying to say here is :-

We shouldn't lose sight that golf is a sport, not a fashion parade .

I think some of the stupid ' dress codes ' do courses no favours , for example men have to wear knee length socks , or I played one course in the South of England where white golf shoes were not allowed blah blah blah

My own view on it is that they should be allowed in clubhouse but not on the course. I think the dress code on a golf course should be strict enough but the clubhouse is in essence a bar and restaurant and a more relaxed atmosphere so denims should be allowed, but neat dress would be essential.

I have no problem with people wearing jeans in the club house, whatever is comfy.

As mentioned above, clubs are not in a position to be turning people away for something as trivial as wearing jeans.

An excellent example of a thriving clubhouse which allows very casual attire is Rush, a lovely clubhouse with good food and great staff which welcomes all locals from the vicinity, whether members or not, for functions or even just a few casual drinks.

Other clubs could do with taking note..
