Hi All, looking for some help if possible.

I have a 2003 Saab 9-3 2.2Tid and it is dumping a ton of black smoke once i climb over 2000rpm. There's no loss of power so i don't think it's the turbo and it's clean enough up to 2000rpm. If anyone has any suggestions, i'd be grateful. The car has done 110,000 miles but has always had a full service history. There is a slight hiss under acceleration.

    Thanks in advance

    sounds like it's over-fuelling.

you need to get the timing / injection checked

Like peasant said the fuel/air mix ratio sounds like its wrong. In this case the car is either getting more fuel than it needs or is getting less air than it thinks it is getting.

You mentioned a hiss so I would bet its the latter possibility and you have a leak in the charge air system. This is air route that runs from your turbo, through an intercooler and up to the inlet manifold. Find and plug the leak (split pipe or cracked intercooler) and the car should be fine.

Alternatively it could be a jammed inlet flap (MAF) that could be restricting airflow. Also your injectors could be worn.

thanks for that peasant, is it something any garage can do? Don't particularly want to pay main dealer prices if at all possible.

Likewise Ferris - gives me a starting point, any idea whether or no they are big jobs?

Any good independant garage would be able to sort it as its not too big a job, more awkward than anything else. Ask here for recommendations for garages in your area.

It really depends how obvious the fault is ...it could be fixed with a strip of gaffa tape or it may need a full diagnostics kit and several trial and error part swaps thrown at it.

    hi all,

just wanted to say thanks for the advice and give an update. I dropped it in to a dealers for an nct and to get the headlight levelling sorted and asked them to have a look at it for me. They traced the problem back to a fault in the intercooler. I bought one on e-bay for €120, fitted it myself and hey presto - no smoke - my mpg also came right up and is now averaging 51mpg (with 130,000 miles on the clock) - i love e-bay (unless you have a problem and they send you atomated responses and tell you that it's a pay pal issue ... etc etc ad nauseum)
