I updated my Mac as normal, Intel update. The system upon restart just booted to a black screen. Spent 2 hours re installing Logic, Pro tools etc.. Just a word of warning. Back up what you have before you update..

All my files and clients work were well backed up but on a personnel level I lost a new song I wrote in a text file :(

A couple of quick tips in case this ever happens.
    1. Boot from your installation DVD by putting it in and holding "c" on the keyboard as you hit power button.
    2. Connect to another mac via firewire then hold "t" on the keyboard as you hit the power button.

If you can get going using either of these 2 you can then open disk utility and repair disk and disk permissions.
Also you should ALWAYS download the "combo updater" from apple.com and not use software update to install os updates.

Lost data can be recovered sometimes if it's really important - check out something called the 'file allocation table' or the mac equivelant - you might get lucky... the file is still there in a way, just not registered to the current OS... fyi, like deleted files just get a $ put in front of the name and not really deleted (until formatted over) - even high level formats don't delete data, just flag the available area.
