What are you drinking this Christmas?

We're stocked up with five cases of Miller (bottles), a warehouse of wine (a New Zealand Pinot Noir for Christmas dinner) and an array of spirits for the granny (she drinks more than anyone else).
Did you watch that program last night about drinking too much and what it does to you?

i can't understand why people feel the need to 'stock up' on booze for christmas.

The shops are only closed for 1 day.

(is this thread condoneing the abuse/excesses of alcohol ?)

The one that curiously failed to mention that alcohol consumption peaked in Ireland back in 2001 and latest figures put it lower than it was in 1999? The one that trotted out the same tired old "maximum healthy amounts" which are known to have no basis in fact.

Yeah, I saw it. It was bollocks.

What I would like to know is who drank all the pint's that were poured?

Oh so that's why the pubs are not doing so well..... it's not that the beer is too expensive or anything like that, it's just that people are drinking less than they used to should!

Worse still, they made up new, lesser numbers. Gone are '21 and 14' as max for M/F, and they came in with '18 and 11' or something equally random. Wait until a half a bag of winegums is excessive..... won't be long now till half the kids in the country are binge eaters. oh - never mind.

Not to drag this more off topic - but I saw the last ten minutes of that program.
Whatever about the units (down to 17 was it?) when the guy said 'I was able to stay below the limit on weekend nights, but it was the odd drink in mid-week that put me over the limit' I had to laugh.

Gentlemen, you were not paying close enough attention to the nice man on telly. Obviously, talk of "units" is confusing, as people can't be expected to calculate how many 10ml measures of ethanol are in their Mouton Rothschild or Stonehouse. So instead, the programme was using the "standard drink". A search on Wikipedia (which is what people do now instead of maths) reveals that an Irish standard drink contains 12.7ml of ethanol.

The programme was giving the recommended maximum intake for men as 17 standard drinks = 215.9ml of ethanol = 21.6 units = in the ballpark of the correct (ie totally made up) maximum expressed the other way.

    Quod erat demonstrandum. Dipso facto.

    (with apologies for recidivistic atopicality)

Clearly not. Besides the fact that he appeared to have the charisma of an anorexic amoeba, I was busy playing with the laptop at the same time, formulating my next brewing recipe :)
