‘Dogs only’ area pilot scheme in Dublin park

DUBLIN City Council has designated part of a public park a ‘dogs only’ area where owners can let pets off their leads to exercise, explore or socialise.
But the breeds deemed by the authority to be ‘dangerous’ will not allowed to go there.
These are the Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Akita, Rottweiler, German Shepherd, Dobermann, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Bullmastiff, Japanese Tosa and the pit bull, which must be muzzled and on a lead at all times.
The initiative was put forward by council officials – ironically, the same officials who came under fire from dog owners earlier this year for threatening to ban so-called dangerous dogs from council estates and properties – and endorsed by members. At present, in other public parks across the city and on beaches, all dogs must be kept on leads.
Wardens are empowered to impose on-the-spot fines on owners who can opt to argue their case in court where penalties for failing to keep a pet under control can be as high as 1,900 euros. The pilot scheme has been introduced in a small area of St Anne’s Park, on the north side of the city, and a decision is to be taken early next year on whether it should be made permanent and extended to other Dublin parks.
“It’s been a success and very well received,” said a council spokesman. “But we have not yet decided to adopt it as a policy.”

    Copied

The Dublin initiative is already being copied in nearby Dun Laoghaire, where council officials are planning to open a one-acre dogs only area in Marlay Park, Rathfarnham. It will be a pilot scheme too, and the views of the local community will be canvassed to see if it should be made permanent.
In counties Clare and Sligo, councils have voted to ban all dogs from beaches during the summer, despite pleas from the ISPCA to exempt certain sections from the blanket restriction and warnings that such a ban would discourage tourists.

wow, who is the person or group behind this drive?
surely a dangerous dog is just that and not an entire breed/s

    Sounds great to me! :)

Somewhere to run our dog without feeling treatened by some of the more aggressive dogs one sometimes comes across.

Yawn, not another "cuddly family pet" V's "those monsters" thread Srameen please. It has been done to death and I think the general agreement and only intelligent conclusion from anybody who knows anything about dogs, is that this restriction on certain breeds is really ridiculous. The most viscous dogs I have ever met is an old JRT we had when I was a kid and my neighbours Labrador.

BAN THEM ALL I SAY - THOSE JRT'S and LABS ARE A DANGER TO SOCIETY.

I would LOVE if they had a dog park like this in Limerick that is enclosed as my dog's recall is terrible but she loves nothing more than running and playing with other dogs. Unfortunately though, she would be sitting outside the fence on the lead because she has the misfortune of living in a completely animal/dog unfriendly country and she is a GSD

    Ok I'll take the bait..

And what vetting procedure's would you have in place to exclude the aggressive dogs, or have you bought into this 'Restricted breeds' list?.

And I'll thow down th gauntlet. Anytime, bring your dog to my house to play with mine so maybe you can get some actual experience of a 'restricted breed' dog and how a dog's breed doesn't determine it's temperament.

Honestly I'd say something if you weren't a dog owner yourself but I would have thought someone who has a dog as a pet wouldn't be foolish enough to agree with such sh*te as this ruling is.

I'd love to take you up on your offer, but mine are way too busy sharping their teeth, lefting weights and preparing for their next pit fight :P

Kinda funny, my latest came from a mate who's a breeder of Staffie, Pits and Lurchers. When I took her I was warned that she comes from 'different stock' than Jericho and I'd have to be very firm with her.

A few weeks ago I met up with him, and he asked how the puppy was getting on with my cat (he'd warned me she'd kill the cat). I showed him photos on my phone of the two of them sleeping together and some video of them playing.. Its funny, the cat teases Ruby into chasing her, then stops to have....

    Have...

    her....

    ARSE licked!.

Its bloody funny and disgusting at the same time.

My mate says jokingly "Jesus Martin, your ruining that dog".. :P

Have you seen this area? It's tiny. There is an area dedicated to toy cars beside it that is about eight times the size of the dog area, there is no bins for dog s hit, small dogs walk under the railings, big dogs can jump over it. It is to small if a fight breaks out, the loosing dog can't escape so the winning dog will get confused and keep fighting, there is no place for dogs to scent, its full of broken glass.

Its a tiny railed square patch that no ones uses. Useless.

Thankfully the off lead walking hours still exist.

Dog walkers are the biggest users of the park, they don't have seasons like the football players, most of them use the park every day, unlike joggers, they go in no matter what the weather is doing, yet because the don't have a united voice decisions are made without consulting any of them.

I talked to one of the councilors about this and he told me it was towards the end of a meeting, everyone was tired and they just ran with it.

They have to realise that mostly bad dog owners don't walk their dogs. Ninety Nine percent of the dog walkers you meet in the park have well socialised, well trained, obedient and above all friendly dogs. The reason they are well balanced, socialised and well behaved is they are used to interaction with other dogs and humans without the constrained of a lead.

This can't happen if there is a off lead ban in the park. If there is a lead ban, dogs wont be used to interaction and then there will be problems.

Does this breed restriction also apply to the off lead hours in every park?

Yeah, mind you, you can go in with all your mates, drink forty cans of dutch gold, intimidate people, mug people, rape people, litter the place, be a nuisance to everyone and the fine is a lot less.

Just don't let your Shepard off the lead.

now i could say im so glad at least now i wont be attacked by that little f..... walking down my road he just might be in the dog park with the rest of them but no i don't go and blame a whole breed, i dont blame a breed for being the victim of little scumbags that have these breeds the bad name but yet when im put in the same category of them like profiling people by profiling their dog yes its get's to me because i ant no scumbag and i own a restricted breed but i wont except to be put in the same category as these little scumbags. i own 3 wonderful pit bulls i have owned this breed for 22 years now and never once have i had a problem i have with loose dogs, if i and other restricted breed owners are able to own and control these dogs with out any problems why are we all being painted with the same brush its not write BSL is not just about the breeds on this list once one dog is on it there much more room for lots more it could be your breed tomorrow thats why its important to fight it no matter where or who it falls on we should all be sticking together and finding out ways for laws to protect our dogs from BSL and to protect us as responsible owners regardless of what breed we own

I wish they would just put some lights down the main strip ("the black mile"). That would mean that my monsters and i and the few joggers that use the park at night in the winter can walk around safely.

I havent seen the dog park yet because i prefer the beach in winter, i might have a look tonight though 9and i might upload some pics)

Same here on the beach, I love it. And at this time of year its mostly deserted of the fluffy toy dog owners who are a scourge to me during the milder months.

I'm just back from a walk with my lads, otherwise I'd have suggested meeting at St.Annes later.

Although St.Annes isn' one of my favourite walks.
