Charity work, which charity?

I've a good mate who runs a large business in Dublin and he recently let some folks go and didn't think he wanted to throw a Crimbo party on the back of redundancies a few months before Christmas, so he came up with an idea to get staff together for a night of charity work in the city, helping the homeless with food distribution around the city for a weekend.

I thought this was a great idea and I went along to give him a dig out and I also wanted to go for the experience. I'm not in the city that much and hardly see homeless people, let alone help them in any way, other than throwing a Euro in a cup when I'm in town (btw, I wasn't getting involved to simply "look at homeless people", I was asked to give a dig out and on this basis was happy to do so).

Anyway, it got me thinking, and I decided I wanted to give some time to charity on a permanent basis.

What I'm asking is do any other boardsies do this and what type of charity are they working with???

To me, when I helped my mate with the above, in a way I was very happy to be able to say I made a very small difference, but that's all it was, a very small difference. You won't make a huge difference or help someone get back on their feet, which is what I had thought charity work would do.

It annoyed me that after distributing food around the city, the same people you helped would be in the same dire straits the next weekend and this got me thinking that any assistance they get is temporary and not effective and to be honest, it kind of got me down.

I was thinking as I was good at English that I could get involved with teaching adults literacy skills, but I'm well known for having absolutely f*ck all patience so I thought maybe that wasn't a great idea...

So just wondering to other folks on boards give time to charities and if so, what type of assistance do they give and do you feel that you are actually helping people???

Maybe you could have a chat with the workers that your "good mate" made redundant, and use some of your networking skills to help them out with getting new jobs?

It's not charity but it would help people.
