Temporary layoff and jobseekers benefit

    Hi,

My uncle has been told that he'll be laid off on a temporary basis from this Friday, with the possibility there'll be work for him again on January 19th. Next week is being taken as holidays, which means he'll be off work for a total of 3 weeks.

From what I can make out from the citizens information website he'll need a P45 to claim jobseekers benefit for the 3 weeks he's out of work, but he's just told me his employer intends providing him with a letter stating his circumstances. I've told him to query this with his boss, but in the mean time has anybody got any experience of this and how it is dealt with by Social Welfare?

Yup he'll be able to claim it,but he'll be waiting a while id say due to the backlog of claims but he should still apply for it anyway.I was laid off temporarily back in july and was told I would be coming back in september but that never happened and was laid off permantely. As long as he gets that letter from his employer stating his circumstances and he should be ok.

I hear that it is upto 10weeks now before he will receive any money,a ****en discrace, after the man working all along, but the longterm(so called unemployed)would get it in the blink of a eye,or get it from some other department............no wonder this place is going down the drain rapid...

The wait he can handle, as I'll see him right in the meantime. Just for clarity's sake though, you managed to claim with a letter from your employer rather than your P45, right? Ta.

This post make no sense. Everybody has the same wait.

His employer should give him a form called "temporary lay off" they are on the Entemp website and then he hands that into the local office.

    Rubbish.

It's about five weeks if it's the first time you've ever claimed, less if otherwise. And if that is a problem, a quick trip to the CWO gets you an advance in about three days.

Every working person should have at least six weeks living money (not salary, just the amount you need to live on) readily available to tide themselves over life's bumps. If people followed this approach there would be a good deal less homelessness and such-like going on.

The long-term unemployed are already in the system. Not suprisingly there is a backlog at the minute and new applications take time. But your post makes no sense to me.

I wouldn't say rubbish, for sure there are some claims taking longer then 5 weeks, you can read about here if you want.
All I can do is give my example and I waited 9 weeks to get any money and that was 2004 and I doubt unemployment was as high back then. Sure I had "signed-off" before I even saw any money.

    Agreed!
Sure wasn't it Bon Jovi who sang:
"we're two paycheques from living out in the street"
C'mon you all know that song!
