Hi, i bought an asus ee pc a few months ago with xp on it and im sick of it. As you know, they dont have a cd drive so it would be pretty hard to get linux on it. I'm just wondering is there anyway around this as im sick of windows as an operating system and would really love to experience linux.

Hope some of you guys can help me as im not very techy:D

You need a USB memory stick with a decent amount of space (1GB+, depending on the distribution you pick). Google for an app called Unetbootin. It runs on Windows and you use it to generate a bootable USB stick from an ISO image of your preferred linux distribution. I used it to install Ubuntu on my eeepc but I went back to Windows as the battery life under ubuntu was rubbish - 4 hours vs over 7 hours in Windows.

It was just too big a file and it's not overwriting windows with linux. i heard puppy linux might work so i'm going to try that. It needed something like 7000mb for it to install and i don't have that space on my little asus pc. any more advise is welcome.:)

I used ubuntu. I googled ubunteee and didn't find much:confused:

Do you think the problem is i'm using a SD card instead of a usb disk?

Ubuntu-eee works great on my 1000. It's a lot better then the xandros that was on it. Everything pretty much works off the bat as well.

Run this and your wireless will work.
    sudo apt-get install build-essential
    sudo ifconfig ath0 down
    sudo ifconfig wifi0 down
#Repeat these 2 ifconfig lines for every MadWifi device you have (ath1, etc)
    cd scripts
    sudo ./madwifi-unload
    sudo ./find-madwifi-modules.sh $(uname -r)
    cd ..
    sudo make
    sudo make install
    sudo modprobe ath_pci

The webcam will also need to be activated in the bios. It's turned off by default in the Bios but xandros ignores it and activates it. :p

Thanks a million guys, i finally got it working. It's a lot better than windows but will take a while to get used to. Still have to get wireless working though but i haven't had time to try any codes yet.

    Thanks again:D
