Hope you guys can help me here ... Thinking of purchasing a club on eBay. What's the likely duty payable on something like that if it costs around the €300 mark?

Cant tell you the exact rates, but i bought a taylor made 3 wood, second hand, it was $40 for the club and about $15 postage, but i had to pay €35 to customs before they would give me the club.

In that case the club was still worth the price, but its put me off buying from america.

got stung badly on a couple of things from the states before. never order much ove $100 from there now. could get lucky or could end up paying 30% or more in duties depending on the carrier, extra charges and the exact item you are buying.

The problem is not "Customs Duty" as most people think. Customs Duty is only 4%. What kills you is VAT now at 21.5% hence it costs 25.5% on the imported value. Also imported value is not necessaraly the same as what you paid for it. If they list the insurance price as $300 but you only paid $200 for it expect the 25.5% to be of the $300!!

Can you not get the seller to write 'gift' on it and bypass the charges? Something runs in my head that you can do this, but could be wrong!

You can but it still might get hit with the charges depending on value. Remenber though anything comming from inside the EU you dont pay duty and vat on so maybe you should compare the prices in the uk with those in america and remenber to add 25.5% to the us costs

and most reputable stores won't mark things as gifts. They would be sending 100s of items to the EU each week..

Thanks for the help guys. Makes it clearer in assessing the US costs on eBay.

should point out also that they generally appear to really go to town on checking everything around christmas, so if you decide to risk it wait until the new year at least..
