Start up problem

A pc which I rarely use now has developed a problem starting up, the problem is it wont start up...
I just get an error which says "Error caused by the following file nv4-disp"
    and the following "Technical Information"

    xxx Stop : oxooooooEA (ox86c45770, ox86FD4008, OXf686ecbc, oxooooooo1)
    nv4-disp
    Begining dump of physical memory
    Physical memory dump complete

Then there's a message about contacting admin or your tec advisor.

Now I'm not hugely tech savy and have no idea what this means.

Any help would be appreciated as this pc hold literally thousands of family photos and videos which I've been meaning to backup and I recently got a drive to do all this. Thanks.

a short term solution to getting the stuff would be to download an ubuntu live cd and boot from that. From there you can copy from the hard drive to a usb key. I'd give you a link but 'm on phone. It should be the first google result

TRY boot pc,hold down f8,see safe mode, menu ,try safe mode boot, use arrow keys safe mode ,up down, arrow to select, safe mode,or select directory services restore/recovery mode, that attempts to repair ,restore broken boot up files,or insert winxp cdrom in cdrom drive, boot up from cdrom, press r for option repair current windows xp installation, even if windows id damaged the photos,mp3 s can be still retrieved by using a LIVE cd ubuntu linux cd.
google linux live cd how to download,
how to burn linux iso ,google it.
ask nicely and someone on boards could send you a live cd in the post.

download free prog imgburn ,select burn iso to cdrom, after downloading the iso.

google live cd ubuntu download to find the website.
even if windows is dead all the data /photos are still on the hardrive in user /documents/pictures folder usually .
if you could borrow a laptop with cdburner ,its handy,or else go to a netcafe ,you,ll need a pc with dvdwriter,or a cdrwriter at least cdrw,or dvdr/rw drive.
after burning iso, place cdr disk in the pc cdrom/dvdrom ,it should boot up linux os from cdr to ram, allowing you to copy pics to usbdrive, or external drive,or maybe burn em to a cdr disk. you may need to hold down del,or f12 to go to bios, as pc boots up,set boot options, boot order , 1st cdrom, dvdrom, set drive 0 hd1 second.to boot up winxp or linux cdrom disk first.

Are you able to boot up in "safe mode" by pressing F8 when you reboot and choosing 'safe mood' ?

    You aren't alone though...

Thanks, it does seem to be a big problem. I figured out how to start in safe mode but by googling nv4_disp I found out my problem is a blue screen of death problem...... Oh boy this sounds like fun to fix...
