The Finance Minister, Brian Lenihan, in a breathtaking admission of complacency, has said that the Government only became aware of the economic "decline" in July

This nonsense really has to end. How can he take himself seriously after that comment, if someone in his position in another country said that he would resign or be forced out.

Imo its time for a general election.

The minister is only one man

Do we not have economists and advisors in the Dept of Finance, were they asleep?

If you want to be pedantic, we only went into recession around June or July, is that what he means?
Like things were going badly but not technically a "decline".

Sounds truthful, it only took the Goverment 18 months longer to notice things weren't all rosy than the rest of us.:pac::pac::pac:
I think all press releases from the Goverment belong to the Humour section ...............

They were too busy (and as a result too well insulated from the effects of any downturn ) counting their money and bonuses to notice anything was wrong,

One can only hope he's just stupid enough to be coming out with that as a half arsed excuse, as oppossed to them being stupid enough that its true....
