Why DRM should burn in HELL....

"A nice bit of copyright hypocrisy for you. It's a story on the BBC website about an upcoming broadcast of an episode of Dad's Army that was thought to have been lost. The original soundtrack had been erased by the BBC, but a radio presenter made his own recording of the episode and kept it for 30 years. The show's producers are thrilled to have found a good quality copy of the recording. The irony is that, as you know, UK law only allows 'home taping' for temporary 'time shifting'. Certainly not for creating a library of recordings lasting 30 years. With their DRM-encumbered iPlayer and other efforts to prevent 'copying', it's even less likely that there will be any duplicate discoveries 30 years from now."

I can understand drm on something like the iPlayer where you aren't actually paying for the product. In this case I don't mind it. It's when it's on products people pay for and then because of the drm get fúcked over. Like when microsoft decided to take their licensing servers offline. People paid for music and now they are getting fúcked over and won't be able to use it if they buy a new pc. Assholery of the highest degree.

I've got a copy of one of Larry Gogan's shows from back in 1992. I'm hoping it might be worth something in 2022. Maybe they could send it into space along with some Beatles songs

^ Yeah I never got Dad's Army, it was boring and not funny in the slightest

In fairness though, that's not a standard too hard to reach

Hopefully they will have weapons that could shoot it down as well.

The iPlayer sucks. but most people are so addicted to 'convenience' that they will install the DRM and use it instead of torrents

DRM is dieing. yea there are still some attempts to create 'uncrackable' drm but it's already fading into obscurity

Buy CDs, you have a physical copy of the song and it doesn't use the lossy MP3 codec.

My ipod isn't quite big enough for a 20,000 cd changer though. Where did you buy yours?

A 160Gb iPod will take a fair amount of stuff in AIFF format.

xkcd had a great cartoon about this http://xkcd.com/488/

the choice with drm is you don't break the copyright now, but you do it in 10-15 years time when you can't get players for that format anymore

    or http://xkcd.com/129/

Yeah, considering if you can actually hear the music then it's "crackable". Thank you line-in/wave-out channels.

DRM is never going to go away entirely. There's nothing ethically wrong with DRM either. It's just usually implemented in an incredibly poor and arrogant way.

If we ever want to be able to rent movies digitally we need DRM. There's no practical way to have rental of any digital content without DRM.
