Yes, I know it makes absolutely no sense, but basically my folks went and got me some Blu Ray discs without realising I don't have a Blu Ray player nor a HDTV :D

So, since I'm not exactly overflowing with spare cash the first thing on the list is a blu ray player that I can (hopefully) use with my existing 32" Widescreen CRT Tv. This obviously means that the Blu Ray player should be able to 'downscale' the 1080p source to 576, right?

Does anybody know if the S350 on special in Xtravision at the minute does it? I read it has 1xRCA Audio out (L+R) which are the red & white phonos and it appears to have 1xcomposite video out which is the yellow phono - if I jam these RCA's into a 3xRCA to SCART converter thing (or even into the side of my TV) will it play back the blu ray discs?

Obviously this is just an interim measure until I get the funds for a proper HDTV :D

*edit* As an aside, I've a 5.1 sound system used by my current DVD player. There doesn't seem to be connections on the back of the S350 for this system, so how do you achieve 5.1 sound? If I'm going all out at a later stage will I need one of those Onkyo boxes? Sorry if I offend anybody with my extremely plain terms, gone are the days when it used to be CRT + VCR = home entertainment! :o

if you connect the yellow, red & white connectors into your tv, the blu ray player will downscale it and you'll be able to watch the films. not sure how good they'd look though.

if your dvd system has an optical input then you can use an optical cable to connect the `blu ray to your sound system

Thanks big_moe - I know the films won't look anywhere near as good without a HDTV and it's certainly on the to-buy list, just under money pressure at the minute so I have to stave it off :)

Same with the DVD sound system, 300W and bought way before optical became a player :D
