I recently got a DVD of my brother's band and would like to be able to listen to it on my ipod without wasting the battery with video playback. Is there any way to rip the audio to MP3 files, preferably keeping chapter marks. (each song is a chapter on the dvd).

I know I bought a music video which shows up as a song on my iPod so when playing it shows a static image and plays the sound. I had to go through the video menu to get the vid.

Can you see the 'track' in your Music list?
It should work and you get to watch the vid when you want.

It's a dvd of a gig they did. I ripped the dvd to my computer so I have the Video_TS folder here. I've heard I can extract the audio tracks from this but my search has come up confused and unsuccessful.

Okay, then can you play the VideoTS files in Quicktime? Think you need a Quicktime MPEG2 codec for that.

If you can play it go to 'A/V controls' there you can select "Extract" on the audio track that's part of the video file. Then save and convert format as required.

I've actually managed to do it. Here's how for anyone else interested.
First, Using MacTheRipper (http://www.mactheripper.org/), in the mode menu select cell extract.
    Deselect the merge cell option.
Tick the Demux option and in the open streams menu just select the audio streams.
    Click Go.

This will give you a bunch of .AC3 files. One for each chapter. This file type is playable in VLC but I coverted them to MP3 with Audialhub.
    Job done.
