So what's the story with the iPod Touch?

Is it just an mp3 player?
Is it a portable media player?
Is it an iPhone without the phone?
    Is it worth the money?
Can you use iPhone apps on the Touch?

I'm thinking of maybe getting one, but don#t know too much about what can be done with them.:o

It's the iPhone without the phone and GSM/GPRS/EDGE/HDPA access (wifi only). Second generation has a speaker built in. Some wouldn't regard it as a portable media player based on the handful of file formats it supports. Most iPhone applications can be used on it. The are some iPhone specific applications.

    Thanks Ethernet.
So considering I've a pretty decent phone, would I be better off getting the Touch and "app"ing it up, as opposed to selling my phone and buying/unlocking an iPhone?

Really don't know what to do about this! I'd like the iPhone, but only for the applications that can be run on it. The drawbacks of the iPhone (no MMS, no text forwarding, etc) are a real letdown, but the applications that can be run on it really do appeal to the geek in me. Whereas my Windows Mobile Device does everything I want in a phone, but doesn't have the "cool" apps of the iPhone.
So as long as the iTouch can to most/all the things the iPhone can, without the phone part, I think I'll get the 32gb version.
Plus Tesco's have 30% on the iTouch this weekend should make it a no brainer for me!

Hard to say. How big is your music collection? Have the 16 GB iPod Touch and it's not quite full yet. Imagine combining that with your phone's extra functions -- 16 GB is really pushing it in this case.

On the flip side, carrying one device beats carrying two.

The iPhone is quite pricey too on pay-as-you-go.

Actually, now that you mention it, I'm gonna have to get the 32gb iTouch. My current iTunes library is around 14gb with more to go on. So 16gb wouldn't do me I'd say.

    Thanks for opening my eyes!

Of course it is wireless too. If you have a wireless network in your home, you can browse the internet. Or anywhere with free wireless internet. Would agree with you and buy the 32GB.

If your collection is 14gb you dont necessarily need the 32 Gb Model which is very expensive. The whole point of having your music on a PC/MAC and having an iPod is you can put a selection of your favorite music/videos/photos on it. Theres plenty of space on the 8Gb for enough music to listen to and drive the whole way around Ireland without repeats. I'd go for the cheapest one, less pricey to buy and if you lose it less of a loss too.
The wireless on the iTouch is great on holidays abroad, most Hotels have free broadband, also MCcDonalds etc abroad. Having all my photos is a bonus too.

General area of games (basic, of course!), note-taking apps, drawing apps, news apps, apps for social networking (Facebook, Twitter), geeky apps for SSH connections, virtual instruments, books, the list goes on and on. If you've iTunes installed, have a look at the Application Store.

ha, yeah it's not the easiest to answer accurately! As said above if you have iTunes try browsing through the App Store and see what you like, there are plenty of free and useful apps so try a few of them out if you get a Touch.

Don't have itunes (I'ma Creative Zen man myself) but the wifi and bigger screen on on the itouch appeals to me (an 8 gb version would be fine for my needs). I was just looking to see if any of the other apps would grab me and seal the deal, so to speak.
