Im currently on the second year of a two year course at a further education college, just wondering are the embassy really strict that you have to be going onto a course that leads to a degree after you come back from your J1?

i thought the requirements were just that you were in full time education?

if not i imagine that as long as you have the option of going into a degree course after your own you should be able to swing it

You should be ok. Full time education is all you need I think

    from USIT

You need to be in a
Full-time day course (running at least 2 years full time) that can potentially lead to a degree or higher qualification
Students are only eligible on the programme if they intend to gain a minimum of a degree qualification at the end of their studies. If a student is studying on a 2 year Cert course or 3 year Diploma course and does not intend (or cannot) follow on to a degree level course, they are not eligible for the programme.

OP - if you're already in the final year of your course afaik there's no way you'll get a J1 for next summer!

Thats not true at all. My entire group that went on a J1 this summer was in our final year and we all got J1s

from USIT you are eligible if
Returning to either a full-time job (if you are in the final year of your degree or higher course) OR (if in a 2/3 year Cert or Diploma course) returning to full-time education in autumn 2009 for at least one more year of full-time study on your current course in order to ultimately gain a degree or higher qualification.

You may want to apply for a follow on course even if you have no intention of doing it. Just to have some proof of coming back home after.

One of my friends was doing a beauty therapy 2 year course in a CFE and couldn't get a J1 - she was in her last year of it though

There's a 1 year work visa for the US that you're eligible for up to 12 months after you finish in 3rd level education.

Might be worth going for that one and you can stay longer or not, up to you.

    Check the US embassy website
