Are older people shafting the younger generations?

I was talking to a friend the other day and we got to talking about recent events. In the end we started thinking that the older generations (50+) are kind of shafting the younger generation.

Firstly most of the property that was sold for huge prices made the older people richer. Essentially the young people have taken out mortgages so the older people have a pension.

The medical card situation is essentially a situation where people without expenses (mortgage, childcare, education costs etc...) earning the same amount will get free medical.

There are other things such as older people earn more money. I know it seems a little silly but medical insurance has gone up for the young so older people can afford it! Car insurance is simply more expensive for younger people.

Before anybody goes on about how they paid their taxes bear in mind that tax was to pay for the expenses of the time. Their pension contributions paid for their generation before

Do you expect to have the same amount of money as your parents have now?

I know my parents invested in property to act as their pension. I see that as a better move than crapping themselves when they cant work and will have to claim state pension.

So your angry that you got a house and they got a pension, instead of you just handing money over through taxes for old peoples pension?

    I'm confused.

I must have missed the thousands of 'young people' being hustled into banks and building societies by 'older people' holding guns to their heads?

Are you trying to justify the fact that you've just buried your parents under the patio?

I assume by "your" you actually mean "you're" as in "you are".

No I am not angry but do believe other are really getting the short end of the stick. I am doing quite well for myself and have reduced my mortgage oer the years.

It has to be said there are a lot of people who were stupid enough to live of credit but didn't notice.

    In a sence yes.

Old people voted in government years back and paid money into a social insurance fund which there government used for day to day spending on whatever they wanted. It paid for what they voted for,

    So they are now old.

They expect to get what old people got years ago -but their PRSI contributions have been spent.

They voted to pay medical cards ,pensions, civil service, civil service pensions, illegal immigrants .junkies and unmarried mothers all when there were very few of these. but the numbers have grown and grown and grown. So a small bill is now a huge bill.

So now what you have are loads of people expecting their payments every week. Any politician like Richard Bruton or the Labour fella would have to tackle all that.

    Surprise = they wont.

BTW -while I have an economics degree - I think what this is called is a conjob.

So, how much did you cost your parents, and the state, before you managed to survive on your own?

There is no doubt that the older generations, particularly in certain sectors <cough> public sector</cough>, are in a better position than we will be when we are old. That is the nature of the Ponzi scheme that is public sector pensions, and even State pensions.

I am not sure that they arranged this, but I was a bit nonplussed by the absolute horror when the richest 5% of 70+ year old pensioners , who probably are the richest 5% in terms of assets, lost a subsidy which they only received about 5 years ago.

Meanwhile most posters on this thread should look forward to working, and paying taxes, until they are 70+.

is there a way to fix it

People can start killing themselves once their kids are old enough to fend for themselves.

I dunno why they don't do this.
