Please help - Rent Supplement question

Can anyone please help me with this Rent Supplement query? I know I should go to them to ask but I'm worried that if I rock the boat they might decide to retract it entirely.

After applying, I got a letter saying that the rent which I pay, €173 a week, exceeds the maximum SWA rate which is €130 a month, but they were going to give me a Rent Supplement at a higher rate for a stated period of a few weeks. I have until the given date to renegiotiate the rent with my landlord or find suitable accomodation at a appropiate rate.

I think this means that I am either to arrange with the landlord to pay €43 a week less in rent or move out and find accomadation for €130 a week or less.

What I'd like to do is tell them that even though I'm paying too much I would be more than grateful for any help they can give me, I'll happily accept the lower rate instead of the higher rate that I'm currently receiving. Would they be likely to accept this? Any help would really be appreciated, I have to sort this out by Jan 6th.

Would it be possible to pay the extra €43 yourself?

I'm not sure of the full situation with rent supplement - I'm applying myself for rent supplement ASAP as I only just discovered I didn't have to pay my €85/wk rent out of my dole. I've never been on the dole before so I assumed that the money had to cover everything
And i've been doing this for two months now :(

Oh yes, this is what I'm hoping for. I'm just a bit worried that if I can't get the landlord to lower the rent or else find somewhere else to rent for €130 a week they'll take the Rent Supplement from me completely. I'm more than happy to accept the lower rate and pay the rest myself.

One thing is, I have a dog. I could possibly say that I can't find suitable accomodation that will allow dogs. This is true, I've checked on Daft. The only place I found to rent that was less than €520 a week and accepts pets is in Rush.

Check out this site it gives all the necessary details that you need. Sometimes the CWO thinks they are giving u da money out of their own pocket so I understand you not wanting to rock the boat.

Also you could ring an alternative CWO for a different area and just give a 'what if' scenario.

Thanks Kellsum, that's a good idea. Also, from that link this was very helpful,

    Your contribution to rent
When the Community Welfare Officer calculates your of level Rent Supplement they will reduce it by €13, this is because you must pay at least €13 towards your rent. You may pay more than €13 because you are also required, subject to income disregards, to contribute any additional assessable means that you have over and above the appropriate basic SWA rate towards your rent. Even if you are paying a proportion of your rent yourself, your Rent Supplement is always reduced by €13.

That says I can pay more than €13, which I know is increasing to €18 in January. That's what I'm hoping to do, stay in my current accomodation and pay the difference.
