    hi
our water pump has recenlty burnt out due to a leaking tap. a plumber is advising us to buy a pretty expensive (approx 700) water pump (which is a negative head pump). but when we researched and spoke to chadwicks in stillorgan, they explained that a 1.5 bar pump (approx 300 quid) is what we need for our 3 sinks and 2 showers - as long as both showers aren't going at the same time.

we're not sure which one to get - but will have to get whichever one is needed - but don't want to get fleeced, as cash is pretty scarce at the mo.

any help at all would be great. :)

A negative head pump is one that will pull water from a lower level when there is no supply pressure at your level, and that seems a little surprising. The maximum (theoretically) you can pull up water is 33 feet, and actually much less since no pump can pull a perfect vaccum. Unless you live in a skyscraper with a well in the basement, that shouldn't apply to you. Do you have any water at all when the pump isn't running? If you do, then I would think Chadwicks are right.
