I would say that getting a bike with suspension at that price point is a folly. It's not necessary for a commute on city roads, and just saps your energy.

I'd suggest going to the local shop, spending your money there on a bike with no suspension -may cost you a little more, but you'll get better service I reckon, with services and stuff down the road

Don't waste your time on a bike that costs less then 300 euro, bite the bullet and get something decent.

Just looking at the selection on the Halfords site, you'd be better off going for one of their "Town and Trail" bikes (or similar from elsewhere) rather than a mountain bike.

I fear the Halfords bike you're thinking about is less a bike than a bike-shaped object. If the following website (http://www.southcoastbikes.co.uk/articles.asp?article=NO_BSO) doesn't convince you of this, nothing will.

(Incidentally I appreciate that £UK90 may be all you have to spend but honestly, it's a false economy. You're better off not buying a bike at all than one which will actively discourage the owner from cycling it.)

A general rule when trying to buy a cheap bike is to try to get less, e.g. no suspension, etc. A hybrid would probably suit best. Consider second-hand, there is a Trek 7.1 on Gumtree at the moment for €200 for example.

No in this one I think think sticky, so you get a "Why you should not buy a cheap (<E150) bike" at the top of the page. As well as in the wiki. Whatever about the sticky possibly being read, I doubt the wiki would be read first.

Hi im geting a bike for my girlfriend i can get a bike up the north for 90 euro the same one down here in the same shop is 140 and it is half prise its in halfords

    http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&mpe_id=58714&cm_cr=No+Campaign-_-Web+Activity-_-ml+p5+949800-_-STAGCAT_ESPOTCAROUSEL_165555-_-Trax+Breeze+17%22+Ladies+Mountain+Bike&intv_id=103942&partNumber=949800&evtype=CpgnClick&langId=-1&catalogId=10151&ddkey=ClickInfo

Now it does not come with mud gaurds and stand so prob going to be about an other 30 euro so about 120 all in i have lights for her i picked them up the other day

Or i could get one from a bike shop he told me he could get one in aluminium frame and good shocks and said he would include mud gards if there was none on it and a stand and put it together im not sure of the make as i have not seen it he said he would get it in and i could take a look at it he told me i could have it for 190

Would it be worth paying an extra 70 for a aluminium

She is going to be useing it for going to work prob take her about 20 - 30 min and going the gym on it when im not going about 30 min

So she is not going to be on the thing all day im just not sure which one i should be geting if i get the cheap one i can buy her other stuff she will need for the bike and if i get the dear one i cant

buy the cheapest, anything under e300 is usually ****e. both will give trouble, the cheaper one you wont worry about throwing in a skip by new years:o
