just got a letter from magnet saying they are launching a new DVR in early 2009. the letter also states that the DVR will have new audio and video connectivity...
manget uses the amino110 at present so im assuming they will stick with amino for the next box.
a quick check of the amino site shows that there is only one box that acts as a dvr, the 530, which also supports H264 instead of just Mpeg2 and is HD ready.

    http://www.aminocom.com/products/ipstb/index.html

im very looking forward to this, does anyone know anything more about what might be announced?
im kind of expecting them to go with the box but not lacunh a HD service right away, but it realy opens the door :)

Not necessarily, Smart use to also use the Amino110 STB, they have now switched to Thomson STB's for their new service.

BTW Smarts new Thomson STB's are HD capable (MPEG4 at HD resolutions and HDMI out), but they are still only proving a SD service.

well, whatever box they provide its seems plausible that they may switch to mpeg4 at some point.
this indicates a potential move to HD services to me.
smart may have done it for bandwith reasons (smart is dsl only, right?) but magnet only provide the stb to ftth customers (afaik) and there is no shortage of bandwith there.

First MPEG4 does not necessarily mean HD, it can and often is used for SD.

Second most of Smarts IPTV customers are Fiber To The Basement, just like Magnet, just Smart use DSL to get from the basement to the apartment, where Magnet use ethernet.

Of course you maybe right, Magnet might introduce a HD service, but I'm just saying new gear is no indication of this.

i think you're saying the same thing as me tbh, just i'm getting the indication that your either trying to argue it with me or just going out of your way to come across condescending.

thanks for your input, but i don't think you're too interested in discussing this with me so i wont follow up on your points.

Jess Subway, don't be so sensitive.

Where in my posts have I been condescending?

I have simply given you completely factual information and corrected some inaccurate assumptions that you have made. Simple as that, no offense meant or argument wanted.

I certainly hope Magnet launch a HD service, Sky needs the competition.

Has anyone heard anything else from magnet?

not a word, i was ordering a second STB a week or two ago and they had no news about any new STB.
the girl i spoke to in sales said she had heard nothing from the marketing people at all

they've announced the box Motorola VIP1910-9

no hdtv announcement yet :( but plenty of improvements
50 meg upgrade for LLU customers on the way
new stb with improved epg (best in ireland is claimed) and dvr
stb is hdcp compliant so fingers crossed for an announcement this year

actually, i might be wrong on that one.
the newsletter mentions speed increases to 50 megs and compares itself to eircom so i just assumed it meant for LLU.

but re-reading it i think it might just mean that you can increase your speed to 50meg on the FTTH package if required, its very unclear TBH

Extremely unlikely, they would have to use VDSL2+ to get up to 50mb on LLU and even then only on good quality lines very close to the exchange.

No, they are probably just talking about their Fibre To The Home developments.

Also I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for HD or expect great quality of the EPG and menu.

    agree with you on that.
but the blurb is phrased to make it sound like a competitor to eircom so they caught me out early in the morning ;)

im not expecting miracles from the epg, i use mce so dont really see it all that often, but when i do the reponse time etc is shocking on the current one, so any improvement on that would be welcome.

at least if it works it will be more advanced than UPC ...

That's not true. As of yesterday we can now nearly record two programs at the same time, if you are home when they start and don't mind not being able to watch anything. I doubt Magnet can do that. :D

Does anyone know when the new magnet box will be available or how much it will cost? There was no info on that in the latest mail shot on it and i can't find anything on their website.
