Getting paid a flat monthly rate... Help!

Ok so this could be a stupid question, but please bear with me...

I have just started a new-part time job and will be paid on the 28th of every month. My employer told me that to keep things simple, I will be paid a flat rate every month of €600. (The job pays €10 an hour and I do 15 hours a week.)

Surely this means that I am losing out?

November for example was a five-week month, but I still only got €600.

Sorry again if it's a dumb question, but maths was never my strong point... :D

This was known as a net pay arrangement I think. While you may be loosing out it might work out with holiday pay and averaging. So work out your months and do the maths -also check if you get holiday pay.

But if you get on with the guy -you should just ask him. Most people are fair about these things especially if you are straight up. Any ideal time to ask is around christmas holiday time as you have holidays etc.

Call into a Citizens Advice Centre as they are normaly helpful or the vunion Siptu have advisors

Unfortunately there was no agreement put in place before I started work, right now I'd be classed as "casual" because I don't have a contract as yet... I am paid by the hour. They are waiting to see how their end of year finances are looking first.

    I do feel swizzled! :(

If you receive a set amount of money per month, then you're a salaried worker, you're not being paid by the hour, regardless of how it gets swizzled around. What happens if you do 20 hours one week?

Afaik, there are certain rules in place for this kind of thing - I'm not sure if it's legal to pay a casual worker a salary.

If you work it out over the whole year, you're not losing out at all because of your holiday hours, but that doesn't remove the fact that you're being paid a salary, therefore you're not legally being paid by the hour.

Do you submit a timesheet or are your hours otherwise accounted for?

I do the same hours every week - I'm always rostered to do the same days.

Edited to add: There is no guarantee that they will provide me with work indefinitely, therefore I feel I should be paid on the 28th of each month for the actual hours I have worked up to that date, and not a flat sum that should hopefully average out over the year.

If you feel swizzled look for another job and weigh up the benefits.

    Then make your decision.

    Its that simple

over the year, there's 4.33 weeks per each month..

    600/4.33

    =138.56/15

so your actually on 9.24 an hour, not 10.

    My calculations are off. :D

There are 52 weeks in a year.

    So 52 * 150 = 7800

    7800/12 = 650

So you're being shafted by €600/year. That might be intentional, so as to give you two months' wages at Christmas, but seeing as your job is not guaranteed, this guy is taking you for a ride. Insist on a wage that's paid based on how many hours you've worked over the previous month.

i agree.. he's doin what landlords do if they make you pay every 4 weeks.

try get paid for every hour you worked in the last month.. that way you'll get your 10euro an hour.
