FORMER GAA President Seán Kelly has called on Croke Park chiefs to buy
Hayes Hotel in Thurles to celebrate the Association's 125th anniversary.

Kelly believes, the landmark building which housed the first meeting of
the GAA in 1884, should be preserved as "a rich and vital piece of our
    cultural heritage".

Said Kelly: "I believe the GAA should buy Hayes Hotel and keep it as a
hotel museum and possibly house offices for various arms of the
Association. After all, we have the expertise.

"We can't just keep hoping that all future proprietors [of Hayes Hotel]
will be as proud and generous to the GAA as the present and past
    proprietors have been."

Bit rich, coming from the man who fought so hard to allow egg chasing be played at Croke Park.

Sean Kelly should realise he's not president any more. He's only coming out with this rubbish to generate publicity for himself before he runs in the local elections for Fine Gael next year.

    Why is it rubbish?

Because its not even for sale. Its a a nothing story. He justs want to keep himself in the media spotlight. He's probably releasing another book or something too. Expect to see him on TubridyTonight or Ireland AM some time soon. He really pisses me off.

I knew people in Croke Park who worked in the Museum and they said that less emphasis was put on the museum and gallerys as time went by.From listening to this inside info from HQ,the buying of Hayes Hotel would probably be a short term pet project for the GAA.

So one would have to shoot down the notion of this being a credible business venture for the GAA unless they were to invest in it properly and possibly market it as a real GAA hotel venue and use it as a premium venue for GAA fans staying over in Thurles who are attending matches over a weekend.

Thats your opinion but personally,I would rather have him as president of the GAA as opposed to the current president of the GAA and the forthcoming president when Brennan goes.

I agree with you here. Whether you like him or not, at least Sean Kelly as a progressive and positive president. Nickey Brennan is way too negative and it's to the detriment of the GAA imo.

Def don't agree that this purchase should go ahead.....money could be used a lot more sensibly, e.g. development of existing GAA facilities, youth development, promote hurling in weaker countries, support teachers promoting GAA in schools, appoint a paece keeper in Cork for the 2009 campaign...all more wordy causes than a hotel in thurles.

Now your takin the piss, not one penny should be spent on that mess its their mess let them sort it out and its more than just a hotel in thurles and what Sean Kelly is proposing is definitely worth considering you do realise that 90% of hotels make a profit, it would still be a commercial hotel just a themed hotel

I dunno. Is much of the original hotel still there? Or has it been renovated extensively since 1884? There would want to be something of genuine substance there. Like the table they sat at or the chairs they used. That sort of thing.
