Hey guys ran HD sentinel today and got a reading of 90% health risk which is bad! Anyway i want to replace the HDD just to be safe... When i buy the new hdd how do i transfer everything on my normal HDD to it? Im guessing its a little more complicated than copy and paste!

From personal experience I've found it easier to install Windows from scratch on the new HDD and then hook up the old one as a secondary and litterally copy / paste any personal files across.

considering i have about 500gbs of data to transfer how long would this take roughly?

Not too long I'd imagine. You'll have the whole lot done in an evening anyway !

    so i
    1.plug out the old hdd,
2.plug in the new one with vista disk,
    3.do a new install,
    4.shut down
    5.insert new drive
    6.Copy and paste EVERYTHING

Will my computer know which drive to boot from if the files have been replaced?
will my computer (eg desktop icons, drivers etc etc) still be in the same place?

When you install Windows fresh on the new HDD nothing will be like it is now. It will be more like you just bought it from the shop.

Also make sure you check the CD you have is a full version of Windows or a full restore disk and not just a disk which allows you to access a hidden partition.

    What I would do:
    - plug out existing HDD
    - attack new one, install windows
    - plug in old HDD as secondary
    - go to my computer and copy / paste files across
    - dispose of old HDD securely once all your files are copied (or keep it for limited backups)

If you've never done it before it can be a bit daunting but it's really all a piece of piss. Would encourage you to hang on for others opinions though before jumping head first into it.

Cool ill hang on a while! Do you have any experience with HD Sentinel? I was shocked to see that i have a 90% health risk and that it estimates my HDD to die in 16 days, considering the HDD is only a year old its really pissing me off, especially since my external died last week! Both Western Digital!

I had a dell Dimension 8200 for 7 years and never had an ounce of trouble with the hard drive!Figures:mad:

I have no experience with HD Sentinel. I always keep backups of my data anyway though so I don't really have much worries if my Windows HDD crashes. Worst case scenario I have to reinstall Windows.

Have you tried any other software to tesk your HDD?

If your HDD is under warranty I would also suggest sending it back if you do follow through with replacing it.

yeah its under warranty until 2010, its actually seagate and not wd as i said above... What other software for testing would you recoment, i tried seatools but for some reason it just stalls, or else im not leaving work its magic long enough

Think im just gonna buy a new hdd cos iv got a 1tb external hdd coming asa n xmas prezy:D so i think ill just buy the Samsung f1 from komplett and do as you stated above cos it makes the most sense and through my googlising is the most pracitcal and recommended method, hope to god it goes well cos i dunno wot id do if i lost my files:confused:
